Hey guys! I'm wondering if it is possible to download the GT5 SpecII update online, move it onto a USB stick and then simply install it onto my PS3 off the USB stick.

The reason I ask this is because I am at university at the moment, and my PS3 is it home. I only go home every other weekend, so to maximise my GT5 SpecII playing time I'd much rather download the update while I'm at university so I can quickly install it while I'm at home and get underway investigating all the new features.

Another reason I would be interested in doing the download at university is the download speed. My download bandwidth at home is a measly 2Mbps, and very rough maths tells me that the update would take ~80mins. However, the university has download speeds that fluctuate between 35 and 80Mbps, letting me comfortably download all 1192MB in under 5 minutes.

Ya can use a program called PS3 Proxy server to do it. Ya can download the update however ya want to like through your college and then connect your computer to your PS3 and go to download the update like normal on the ps3 and then cancel it...the program copies the link and you can replace it with your file.

I was also wondering this. I'd like to have the update file to see if I can tear it apart on a computer and look for interesting stuff.

Links to the individual PKG files are available in the XML feed the game uses to check for updates, which you can find here (note most browsers will display a "warning" because the PlayStation update server's security certificate is not assigned by a public authority, don't worry).

Just downloaded the update on my PC and ran it through Unpkg... the result is a bunch of folders (810 to be exact) named mixing letters and numbers from 4A to WZ... the contents of those folders are lots and lots of files without extension, ranging from 2kb to 112Mb... Interestingly, there are only TWO files above 31Mb, and both those two files are 112Mb and 111Mb... could those be Kart Space and Spa?

Just opened those file with and Hex editor but nothing seems interesting... maybe someone with more knowledge could scan the PKG and find something hinting future DLC packages...

Wow this thread would be very useful for the future. There are a ton of people that have a problem with dowloading/not downloading them on the PS3.

Too right, stupid area to live in with really old telephone lines means I get 0.3mb, at college I get 40+ everyday, god knows what it's best is. I did the spec 2 on my ps3 at home and it said 780 minutes :O.

Hey, this is great!
Now I don't have to wait for the patch to download before I can start racing - I can do it all at once! :sly:

Wow, thanks for all this useful info guys! Thanks especially for the links Jordan and acascianelli - they will come in very handy :)

Just wanted to add, that is for the US / NA version of the game (BCUS98114)

There are two other versions of GT5 that I know of
BCES00569 (EU region I believe)
and
BCAS20108 (don't know what region - asia?)

These codes should be on both your game disc and box art somewhere.

i didn't know this!

this should be stickied imo.
I was thinking about replying to this thread with this. 👍👍👍

A separate thread should be made, so Jordan can be the OP with the only post, locked thread and all.

I don't need this to happen. A lot of people really need this.

Just to be clear, these files actually aren't much use by themselves, other than to decrypt and inspect their contents. You can't just put them on a USB stick and update the game - it's a little more complicated than that, and would require a full tutorial/walk-through to actually be helpful. If someone would like to do that, it would definitely be a great resource to host here. 👍

The PS3 won't run these from a stick. They require authentication from the server. I assume that's how they stop the hackers and cheaters.
