For the past couple months I haven't played GT5 because of a few bugs in the game/server system that have made enjoying gametime too short.

The common issues are:

Attempting to do a Seasonal Event - I get to the screen with the play/replay/car options (just prior to racing) and the game would freeze up, and the only way to get off the screen is to quit the game - and my console would restart on its own.

Watching a Replay - Replay would play, but no options would appear. Pausing just paused the replay, but to leave the replay I would have to quit the game - and my console would restart on its own.

Online Gameplay - After a couple minutes of drifting online, the game would freeze up, and the only way to get off the screen is to quit the game - and my console would restart on its own.

In the past I had just backed up my game save, and tried re-installing GT5, but that didn't fix it. So last night I did the same thing... only I reformatted my whole console with a full format. After getting the game all re-installed and updated, I restored my game save data. Tonight, I'm still getting some freezing up in the same areas.

Is my game data the problem? Is it my console (60GB BC version)? Or is this still some issues within the game/server?

Any insight would be appreciated.

I have experienced all of these issues at some point. Usually the updates take care of these. However, if you still run into these problems on a daily basis you may need to clean the console.

My console sits on the floor upright (vertical). Refrain from placing it flat (horizontal) as the CPU, GPU, Fans and motherboard are on the bottom. Too much heat will cause the console to do strange things.

The Blu-Ray laser is the most common issue. As the dust collects, it becomes more difficult for the game to be read. Thus causing freezes and unexplained crashes. You can find some great tutorials on YouTube that can help you out. But take caution; opening it up will void and all warranties you have.

Cleaning the Blu-Ray drive.
Cleaning the inside

I highly doubt it has anything to do with installed data or the server. That said, you can try a fresh install after clearing all of the GT5 data and saved data.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like your console is the problem.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to clean the console up a bit to see what happens - it sits vertically so I got that going for me. If all else fails I'll get a different console.

Thanks again - I'll be sure to update this thread with any success/failures.

Spyder, I'm starting to have the same problem too. When ever I try to look for the Mugen S2000 or the Shelby GT350R. The car doesn't pop up or anything but the specs and everything else is up and music freezes, I have to turn off my PS3 and it doesn't turn off so I have to switch by the back. I know it's my blu-ray laser and how my PS3 tends to act up(got YLOD in early Jan. 2012 but fixed it)

Best of luck. :)

^^This

GT5 runs perfect on two of my slim consoles,
freezes regularly on my launch fat model.

I'd really hate to have to switch to a slim and lose my backwards compatiblity - but if it comes down to it then that's what will happen...

Dust and blue ray laser
99.9% of unexpected non common bugs or random glitches and quirks are due to a dying blue ray laser , YES a blue ray laser just doesn't go out. it slowly but steadily begins to wear out due to a manufacturing error by Sony's part , some consoles never fail while others don't last very long, My ps3 had allot of issues with kilzone 3's cut scenes , they would be out of sync . Then gt5 had what your having till it got to the point it became unplayable and then the dreaded " your disk cannot be read" and then the disk never showed up on the XMB. =D best guess is o try cleaning the laser and if that docent work replace the sucker , that wil set you back 100$.
