Although the last five editions of the Gran Turismo series have been on one single disc, the most current one, being GT5, is stored into a Blu-ray Disc. Although the size of the content was enjoyable on all five, GT5 obviously being the most with its complex technology utilized for the PS3, fans of the series are always looking forward to seeing even more content, new or old, that will reassure the meaning of "The Real Driving Simulator." But data of large quantities are hard to contain in storage mediums, even in a Blu-ray disc. But what if you could store more data and store and divide it into two discs? There are some pro and cons about this decision though:

PROS
  • Theoretically, more content available, since there's more space to save data onto

CONS
  • You lose one disc, you're screwed

That's all I can think of right now.

A dual layer BR disc is 50GB, GT5 is around 15GB. Space is not an issue.

Wow, I never knew that; my research on Blu-Ray discs was vague
But wait. Why so much leftover space available, but the in-game content and/or the opportunities seems so empty?

You mean like events and stuff? That's mostly just code. Stuff like that doesn't take any space compared to assets.

Well only Kaz can answer that but I assure you, they had plenty of space, the lack of tracks and premium cars which take up the most space are for other reasons, mainly time one would assume.

Not exactly, just cars, tracks, the works.

No offense, but we're not really going to have to answer this, are we?

Considering what a lot of the very early post-GT4 Gran Turismo trailers looked like (Vision Gran Turismo), I think the Premium cars came relatively late to the decision table, necessitating a shift to "Premium" cars first revealed in GT-HD. In reality, we don't know. That's just my theory. But I assume there wasn't much more content ready to go that could've been put on the disc, hence the lack of material.

I like how the poll is an either/or question, but the answers are yes or no.

Yes, I think GT6 should be on one disk or two. Am I doing it right? :P

LOL at the dumb poll, but If I recall correctly there was at least one GT version that had an arcade disk and a career disk.

As already stated, there's zero need for more than 1 disc. It would be nice, however, if they would take advantage of the space next time though. Why not add make the sound lossless, or simply don't compress it at all. You get better sound that way.

Well, I think they won't need the 50GB of a Blu-Ray. And even if they do, it'll only be a few GB, so it'd be more sense to make it as a free-download in the Playstation-Store insted of using another disc

Yeah I'd like GT6 to be a free download too.

That's not what I tried to say :D

I meant if they need 52 GB, they can put 50 GB on the disc and let us download the other 2 GB (maybe with a code for the store). But you can't use only the 2Gb without the disc, so I have to disappoint you, but no free-GT6 for us :grumpy:

They won't need anywhere near that. The 3D models are the largest items and they only weigh in at around 10-20Mb per car (premium) and around 100Mb for a track, roughly. Then they can use compression to make things even smaller. Even if they include much higher detailed tracks and slightly more detailed cars in GT6 for PS4 it's not going to need more than 50GB.

People need to understand that storage media are getting smaller, yet better, all the time.

PS1 - CD-ROM
PS2 - DVD
PS3 - Blu-ray
PS4 - possible new format......? (I doubt it)

The only reason the older editions of GT were released on 2 discs is that the discs had much less storage space. PD refused to allow space to be an issue so, for example, Simulation and Arcade were put in separate discs for GT2 so neither would be compromised.

I KNOW there will be only one disc for GT6 when it is released.

Yes, GT2 came with an arcade and a GT mode disk.

This. I imagine that GT6 is going to contain more data than GT5 but it would probably be less than 50GB anyway. It would be absolutely pointless to have GT6 on two discs.

This too. Although a wild guess would be the detail that he puts on the cars and some of the tracks.

Smaller?
The current rumours are that a 6x or 8x BR drive will be in the PS4 (PS3 has 2x). I've also heard speculation that it will support 100gb Blu Ray discs (BDXL) but not from anything close to resembling a credible source.

Smaller in physical size, I meant. :) Each successive PS uses the next generation of storage media.

Well that is true but PS4 will only have a new format of storage media if there is any new ones while it's still in production.

I'm not sure how to answer that poll but no. GT6 will be a PS4 game which inevitably will use storage mediums with more space. I don't see GT6 taking up more than 30-40gb, if that.

..IF by chance we see 2 discs, it should be for Simulation and Arcade i.e. GT2.

PD are probably not going to put GT6 on two discs unless they absolutely have to because they ran out of space on one disc and no more data will fit onto it.

If only someone had pointed this out already, he would have known then......

Yeah, I never knew how much Blu-ray Discs can store now; I've never used CD's to store any data since the early 2000's; since then, all USB's.
It seems time and innovation have caught up with the CD

Actually, wasn't the biggest game (size) L.A. Noire since the facial animation took up 30+gb?

On topic..
@MSTER232
Yeah, and why would PD waste a whole 50gb disc (or however big PS4 discs will be) for one game mode?
