So I finally purchased, and downloaded this game, a little late I know. Download takes place while I watch tv and do work to pass time, then when itcomes to installation, it kept on telling me "An error occurred during the install operation, with the error code 80010038. Even after booting up the ps3 in safe mode and restoring the file system, I still get the same issue, always around 8%.

Help?

Could be a lack of drive space, check HDD space in the XMB menu, Settings/System Settings/System Information. My GT6 downloaded install + updates is 27GB. If I recall correctly initial install was around 15GB so you'll need that + the installation file size free(approx 30GB).

The most common causes of this particular error are:

1) INSUFFICIENT HDD SPACE
When you download a 20GB for example you need 40GB free space. Once the data is unpacked it deletes the initial space and just takes the 20GB.

2) DOWNLOADING THROUGH WIRELESS CONNECTION
If your connection is wireless it may have lost signal for a fraction causing the data to corrupt which only becomes apparent at your 8%.

Switch to a hard connection and hopefully it will be ok.

3) THE BEGINNING OF HDD FAILURE
This is the most likely cause unfortunately. Some people say that large files can be the issue here and that after a HDD format it works fine. Others say you need to go-all-out and replace the HDD.

Either way this is a right pain but should certainly resolve your issue.

Good luck @Peter.

Well my HDD space is more than adequate, so it would not be that. I have left it to format the HDD, which will take about seven hours, so hopefully that works out, even though I have to re-download the game, which will probably take me another 3 hours. I guess only Gran Turismo is worth all this trouble.

I will also try to download it through an Ethernet cable this time rather than through wireless. If it doesn't work this time around then I've just run out of luck completely.

Thank you for the tips though, all of you.

I had this problem not so long ago with my PS3. The error code was the same and my games would not install if they were over a certain size. I think the largest one that was able to be installed was ~1GB, maybe even less.

Wether I downloaded through wireless or Ethernet cable the result would be the same. I tried every possible option using the Safe Mode menu but to no avail.

Basically if it's like mine your hard drive has most probably had it. Of course you may be able to get it working by using a certain restore/reformat function as it's hard to determine if the cases are exactly the same.

In the end I replaced my hard drive and my PS3 has been fine ever since.

I definitely recommend backing up all save game data on a USB stick or by using the PlayStation plus online cloud backup feature.

Good luck.

Ash.

Well, I formatted the hard drive, and it downloaded and installed just fine, so that's sorted.

New problem though, it seems to be stuck on update installation. It downloaded and installed the 12 parts of update data just fine, but it seems to be stuck on the in-game screen "Please wait, Installing" with the usual warnings to not turn your system off while the HDD light is flashing. The timer doesn't seem to be going down (going up in fact) and the HDD light is solid but not flashing.

UPDATE: Here's a photo of the screen I'm stuck on. The timer goes down, then at a point stops decreasing and begins to slowly increase., while the HDD light stops blinking. Eventually the console will freeze entirely. Please don't tell me I have to re-download GT6 and do that one-by-one update thing. Also please don't tell me I need a new hard drive, as that would be worse news.

have you tried an ethernet connection?

Seriously, i'm fooling my ps3 right now, I had wired the connection through a wireless booster... downloads never have been faster on this thing

I know I should try installing them one by one, but the speed of the hybrid connection I have makes me think that wireless only traffic corrupts the download. i've been at it for an hour and a half righ now, and well, i'm at 1.08 now. i'll see what is going to be the after effect of that in morning though at it is now 12 AM here in Montreal

I got everything to work eventually. Boy was it hell. I had to re-download the game and install every update one by one. It took a couple days because I decided at a lot of points to just play the game as is at whatever stage I was at.
