I saw somewhere about an idea that all these DLC's are going straight to the GT6 funding budget. And...I started thinking about it.

GT5 has sold about 8 million copies, at lets say... $45 a copy.
They Spent $80 million making GT5, so they have already gained $280 million from GT5 sales.
Now, lets say that 70% who purchased the game has also bought the complete pack, car pack 2 and the upcoming DLC's. thats an extra $27 per person. Thats another $152 million.
So, a total of $432 MILLION just from GT5.
Do you guys think that would be enough for GT6?

actually the first 6 million sales were at full price =P

Yea, realistically its probably 35-45%. But, i didn't check around the "How many DLC's have you bought" threads.

Well sure, but even then you have to take into account that we don't have eight million people on these forums and that those who seek out forums for discussion on a subject tend to make up a more dedicated group of enthusiasts who are far more likely to open their wallets for additional purchases.

I'm guessing that the number of DLC purchasers would be even less than 35%.

But I can only really speculate, obviously.

As much as a profit as that appears to be, I think we know Sony/PD will be pocketing a lot of that as profit from the $80 million invested.

If only companies didn't have things other than development costs to worry about.

Restaurants don't go out of business when people don't eat there because they aren't allowed to "shine," they go out of business when people don't eat there because the cost of ingredients and property ownership gets wasted when there's nobody to serve.

That being said, is it really so wrong that they turn a profit on something they've developed, promoted, and maintained?

The first DLC pack, which will likely be the best selling one for a variety of reasons (most notably how cheap it was when it was available as a set), has sold over a million so far. When you figure that GT5 had probably sold around 8 million copies (perhaps even more) when the DLC sales numbers were released, it points towards the GT5 DLC pickup rate probably being no higher than 15-20%. Maybe less when you take into account how GT5 XL will cut into DLC sales by including the DLC with it.

Also, GT5's development costs were mostly paid off (if not paid off completely) by sales of GTPSP and GT5:P.

I didn't even think about the XL edition. That would put some more money in, too.

But now that I think about it, you guys are probably right. I have no idea why I used 70%...

Hopefully they spend more than that. GT6 would be SICK if that was the case:sly:

Exactly. GT5 doesn't have to "fund" GT6. GT5 has to turn enough of a profit to make it a good bet for SONY/PD/SCEA to invest money in GT6. Judging by sales, it has, although it hasn't been any Modern Warfare 3 by any means... ;)

You also have to factor in operating costs. Everything from paying the employee's all the way down to the water when they flush the toilet. Didnt they move into a new building because of the earthquake? I'm not sure if they had one built, or if it was an existing one.

What about sponsorship? Every race I see has some kind of GT logo on it. Although, sometimes I think they have such a large foot print when it comes to racing games that they can basically put their name on anything they want.

PD also sells a lot of GT clothing and other things that have the GT logo on them. I know its not as big of a money maker, but its still money being added in.

Not trying to defend PD. I'm actually upset about what happened to online racing and tire wear recently. Just like seeing both sides. I agree with everyone on here saying that they bring in more than whats needed to develop GT6.

Most games sell far more on Xbox than PS3 so imagine GT5 was multiplatform it would probably be the 2nd or 3rd highest grossing game. Not that far off COD and way more than any other games, only FIFA would be in the same ball park.

Not bad for what is now said to be a niche product!!!

GT5 did around 2mil for first week sales, MW3 **PS3 version** did 4.8mil (5mil counting japan) first week sales

Three questions to add to the pot:

1) What % does Sony take as Publisher?
2) What % does Sony take as console maker?
3) Knowing that PD is a subsidiary of Sony, what are PD's contractual obligations to Sony regarding profits?
