If you dont know what is GT500, LeMans, DTM.. or have some doubts or curiosities about it, here is the right place. This list explains about it and have the list of the cars that are on these categories and on GT6. It also does tell the difference between real cars and Polyphony fantasy cars. If you are doing a racing series, this list can give you a good hand about which cars to use. This also list classic cars, road car prototypes and supercars.

PS.1: Sorry about any english mistakes, english is not my native language.
PS.2: This thread will be updating to include DLCs and new cars. Im opened to discussions about it, and, if you have any suggestion, please, post it. This list can change by suggestions and discussions.
PS.3: Very long post.
PS.4: I didnt know which are I would post this, if it is on the wrong area, be free to move.

Part of the content give a concept, an explanation, about some of the words we use most of times, without knowing the meaning. There is also some comments about what is a shuffled, balanced category in real world.

The list of categories carries 62 categories (and 11 one-make cups), divided in three parts: 100% categories, Real and Fiction. Every category has a description made to introduce it for you (except the 100% categories, because they would repeat the other descriptions). Below of the most real cars has a link showing what website provides the information about it. Due to the fate that information about racing entries and car specifications on the internet are not abundant, some of the links are videos. You can try yourself search at the website more stuff about the car and the category by clicking the link.

For those who wants organize/host events with these categories, it is highly recommended to do a flatness (balance the category) first (be a category doesnt mean have balanced cars). Some real world categories do have a good balance; Some others, dont. It depends on the regulations and what does motivate the category to exist. For example, some categories are created to generate new technology. Their regulations are more open to innovations, innovations that give advantage to some cars. Another example are expensive category, where not all teams can create the best car possible due to financial reasons. Keep that on mind.

Another good thing to advise: Not all categories are balanced with the same HP/weight. Some categories have cars that are equal with more or less HP. FIA GT3, for example, uses air restrictors to restrict the engine - not HP. Taking two cars from GT3 for example: Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT3 is restricted to 500 HP, while Audi R8 LMS Ultra gets 560 HP.

=> The 4 "kinds" of cars

The three types of cars are: Street Cars (road), Tuned Cars (tuner), Race Cars and Racing Prototypes. The reason of the existence of the road car is to be sold in large scale, ready for consumption. They are ready to satisfy costumers, with high comfort, security and economy (we have some exceptions of course). Tuning cars are modified road cars for a different reason, like racing and drifting. Race Cars works exactly the same way. There are some differences between a Race Car and a Tuned Car.

Race Cars are always created based on an specific regulation for competition, while the Tuned are created freely, without any kind of competition rules - this is the main difference. Also, race cars are some kind of special Tuning, made by several engineers. While most Tuned Cars are made focusing the costs an the HP increase, Race Cars tends to be more expensive and tends receive less HP increase. Some Race Cars even lose Horsepower after tuned, to fit on an specific regulation. It is difficult to see what is what with car specifications. However, Tuned Cars tend to have less downforce than the Race Cars.

Racing prototypes are cars that doesnt come from any road car at all. Like Race Cars, they are created based on an specific regulation for competition. Some of these cars are open-wheel. An Formula 1 for example is a open-wheel prototype.

=> The Concept of Categories

Out of racing, category is a group of cars that have some characteristics in common. Thats true for road cars and tuned cars, also for Race Cars and Racing Prototype. But for Race Cars and Racing Prototypes, that goes a bit more far. For those, category is a group of cars that were made with the same regulation.

In GT6, we have few race cars and racing categories. For racing, there will be two types of listed cars: The ones that are "100% real categories", made by same regulations or very look alike regulations (a special part of the list is for them). These have a tendency - it is not a law - to be balanced. And the ones which are categories by road car concept (group of cars that have some characteristics in common) that belongs to the same league but not to the same regulation. Cars that runned in very different ages but belongs to the same league have a relation between each other.

=> The concept of Touring Cars

There are two kinds of Race Cars: Grand Tourers and Touring Cars. The difference between a Grand Tourer and a Touring Car is very small and concept is a bit confuse. Some Race Cars are even a Touring Car and a Grand Tourer one.

Touring cars are race cars based on comfort street cars. The comfort street cars are made for easy drive and to be comfortable for long distance travel. Touring cars also are more trustable.

They are equipped for racing. At some Touring Cars Championship rules, the use of sophisticated technology is prohibited. The reason ? To not make the Touring Cars too much expensive. One of the main points here is to keep the some base car characteristics, specially the comfort and the design.

=> The concept of GT (Gran Turismo or Grand Tourer)

Grand Toures are race car with the body shape based on road cars. Part of the advantage characteristics are also imported. The main difference for Touring Cars is that these cars have to be a bit more different from the base cars, discarding the comfort and non advatange aspects (however, some categories and regulations rule that the GT car has to be alike the base road car). Another difference is that these cars aren´t based on comfort cars, they can have Super Sports Car on base (like Ferraris and Lamborghinis).

=> The Concept of a Racing Prototype

Racing Prototype, or just "Prototype", is a car designed for a special desire: Race. No base road cars. They usually have special aerodynamics, lower gravity center and less weight. They are popularly called LeMans, however not all Prototype is a LeMans car nor all LeMans car are prototypes. They also have some sophisticated technologies. Most of these technologies are used on the future on road cars, when they get cheaper (thats why the name is "prototype"). For example, a Formula 1 car is a prototype.

=> The Concept of Stock Car

Stock, as the name says, are cars that are stocks, with no modifications. At it first moments, stock car was created for road car racing with no tuning. However, today stock car are category cars that have the same engines, brakes, body shape, suspension, etc. The variations are at minimal adjustments, like the car height, but these small changes can do big differences.

This part of the list won't have any description. Their description are on Part II and repeat descriptions would only make the list even longer. They are not necessarily cars from the same year, because some cars run more than one year. Its required a minimum of 3 cars to be listed.

PS: Remembering that some cars are balanced by air restrictors and not horsepower. Weight may vary too.

Part II - Real Series

The most interesting part of the list has real cars from real categories that are inside the game, like Super GT, LeMans, FIA GTs and many others. It starts from the most popular ones to the most unknown.

1 - Well-known categories

Most people at GT5 already know these categories, that are widespread at all players from world and some of them are included as a category in game (like GT500), at the options.

The categories "DTM (2000-2004)" and "DTM 90´s" are original from this list (I´ve made some few changes):

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=159182

1.1 - SUPER GT AND JGTC

Super GT and JGTC are categories from the Japan Tourism Championship. The real championship happens one time per year, and have some interesting rules (like put ballast for winners) that are not performed on GT5.

Its very common confuse JGTC and Super GT. The game does this confusion, else PD knows about what is right. Super GT has the new cars (2005 upper) of GT500 and GT300. JGTC has the old cars, 2004 below. Not all, but most GT500 are cars with 500 hp and 1.100 pounds for Super GT and 1.150 pounds for JGTC. GT300 are cars with 300 hp and variable weight. So, when someone says that will do a Championship using Super GT GT500, means that will do a championship with cars with year 2005 upper, with the general specifications of Super GT for GT500. When someone says that are going to do a JGTC Championship, he has to say if it is GT500 or GT300. Or better: Should say. In practice, the mistakes are made, by someone's ignorance or by the interest of marketing or by other reasons.

In game, GT500 is JGTC GT500+Super GT GT500. The same happens to GT300.

1.2 - DTM

Putted in game as "Touring/Tourism cars", the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) is, like the name says, a competition for German touring cars ( its evolution made it accept non German cars too, but to simplify we say that are only German cars like it used to be). For those who Super GT is very familiar, DTM would be the German Super GT. GT5 miss dozens of cars here (as it does in many others real categories).

1.3 - Nascar

Nascar is the United States Stock Car. They are heavy cars, with high horsepower, that most of times races on ovals circuits (in GT5, Daytona, Indy and Special Stage Route X only), that are very look alike each other but for our surprise they are different and requires some skills. The category is also well known because of the accidents.

1.4 - LeMans

These cars have, at most of times, concentrated weight on the back of the car. They are never 4x4 nor FF (there are very few exceptions that got 4x4 traction below 120 MPH), and they always race between 450 HP and 800 HP, and without the engine restriction some of they can reach 1.000 HP. Because of that they require skills from the driver. They also have extra aerodynamics.

LMP1 and LMGTP are categories for brand new fast prototype cars. They are lightweight and the fastest ones. The original category has complex rules.

Group C is a old version from LMP1 and LMGTP, with cars from 1987 to 1992. Less technology dont make them worse: They have more HP and their handling is not bad.

GTE is a category that had several names. It started on 1980. They used to be very alike Nascar (first name: IMSA GT). But today they look alike very different, more "normal", but with the LeMans kind: No 4x4 neither FF and some extra rear pounds. And extra aerodynamics.

The LeMans category is more diffused than it looks to be. It have many national versions, like ALMS (American LeMans Series). The national versions are not the same as the international ones, but they are very look alike.

1.5 - FIA GT

Different from most people thinking, FIA is not responsible only for GT1, GT2, etc. Actually, FIA is the largest institution at racing, and organize many others championships like Formula 1, , some Rally, etc. FIA GT is the Grand Tourer that is neither German nor Japanese nor LeMans. Its the international Gran Tourer Championship.

70´s cars, they have a different engineering from the normal cars at their time. They used some kind of fans to create downforce, not aerodynamics like the normal cars do. I dont have many information about them because its a too old category.

2.5 - Nurburgring 24 hours

The 24 hours of Nurburgring happens every year, and its an event based on 24 hours of LeMans. Like LeMans, the event runs more than 1 series (or categories).

Its an welcoming event. It receives cars from international FIA events and Touring Cars. At starts, it had DTM (not listed because the DTM 24 h of Nurburgring category had only DTM cars). Today, the main category is the SP9 one, which most of it is filled with FIA GT3 cars. Have cars that are very look alike their road versions at the "lowest" categories. Some old cars still runs today, in the "lowest" categories too.

This was an event that I hesitated to put on the list due to low information about it on the net and because it is one that I barely heard about it. 12 hours of Bathurst runned to 1991-1994 (I have no info about any entry list during this first period), re-appeared in 2002 as an 24 hour event, disappeared again on 2004, and then re-established as 12 hour event from 2007 until now.

It has the exactly same vibe from Nurburgring and Spa events: Grids of GT cars, with GT3 as main category. Some of them are very similar to their street version, some others not. One of the websites that I found the data has links that leads to HTTP 404, they can´t be accessed directly.

Part III - Fiction Series

The fantasy cars created by PD are famous. The famous TCs, the Formula X1 and otherS...Here we have, too, the concepts and road prototypes (the car that looks like a road car but is not a road car. What it has to be special? Lets figure out!)

1 - Race cars

Fantasy Race Cars are based on real categories, that obeys to unknown regulations, and never existed. Every category has the aerodynamic balance, or, in other words, all vehicles from these categories has the same aerodynamics points.

1.1) Touring

Real and fantasy touring cars mix themselves here, obeying to the Touring Car concept. The division were made by HP, to make them look alike GT500 and GT300. RMs were included to make it bigger.

3) Road Cars

Road car categories like these doesnt exist. Competitions between Ferraris and Mercedes are truly street racing... But its good to dream them on tracks. In olds GTs, PD had divided for these cars and put race cars separately (race cars were called "special cars" on Gran Turismo 2). The classes were A,B,C and S (for road cars). In GT5, they abandoned this division and they made some road and street category, like the Super Sport Cars. Prototypes and Special Road Cars are only for listing the famous "Concepts and Prototypes road cars", not for any kind of racing purpose.

3.1) Super Sport Cars

Super Cars. Dreams of consumption. Dont need explanation.

3.2) Concepts, Prototypes and race-car-based road cars

Concepts are models, outlines, for future cars, with some extra aerodynamic that exist to study the vehicle dynamics. Race-car-based road cars is when the Race Car come first (and in some case when the tuning car is distuned), and then is created a road version based on it, with a better price. At this list I didnt put the Race Car concepts.

3.4) Hybrids & Electric Cars

The cars from the green future, with high technology, high responsibility and commitment to the environment. There is a lot about these cars out there, about how they work, about their technology and discussions about them. Some people think that electric engines will ruin the cars and make them boring. Some others, find peace on their quiet noise and love their torque. There are a lot of questions about this subject.

1) Wikipedia says that the BMW Mclaren F1 GTR Race Car has all the specs to be a JGTC Car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_GT

2) Lexus IS F Racing Concept 08 obey most of the brazillian Stock Car specifications.

3) Amuse S2000 GT1 is not a FIA GT1 car.

4) BMW M3 GTR raced JGTC GT300, also LMGT and FIA GT2, but never raced DTM.

6) Balance of Performance (BoP) of FIA GT3 is present at this link:

http://gt3europe.com/cars.php?market=false&key=12

If you click on the car, at the car´s page has it weight and HP. The page is always updated.

7) Toyota TS020 (GT-ONE) was a GT1 car. It could be considered a GT car because it actually had a Road Car version. Same happens to Mercedes CLK GTR, Nissan R390 (road car is present on GT6) and Panoz GTR-1. The TS020 was accepted as a prototype too, because it had the prototype specs. So, this car is the exception of GT-Racing Prototype concept, because its either accepted as a GT car or accepted as a Racing Prototype car.

8) BMW M3 GTR Race Car and BMW M3 GT2 doesn´t have their original versions in-game, they only have their adaptations to run on Nurburgring 24, handicapped versions of the origina GT2 versions. In-game BMW M3 GTR Race Car adapted to race against DTM cars while the BMW M3 GT2 adapted to race against GT3.

:) Thanks! Nice work! Now i know which car to use in gt300 and gt500 series, i know i can use almost every car (maybe all?), but it is more fun to use the "right" car for the specific categories, like it would be in real life races.

Im glad you like it. Thats one of the points of the list.

Just I cannot see the Delta Wing car...

Yes, because it wasnt on version 1.0 of GT6.
I posted this, but since this came to the page 91902091 of the forum, I didnt need to update it. Let´s see it, if it seems to be useful to some people I can do some updates.

Amazing post!
I'm often wondering which car would fit a certain race....now it's documented 👍

Good work Vendrah. This post is now on my favorites list on my I-pad that I have within reach of my racing seat. Very helpful. Thanks again.

No offense, but I don't understand the praise for this considering how arbitrary it all is. Yes, he put a lot of time in it, clearly, but it still isn't particularly accurate.
To us it is ... we race with our "clan" and try different leagues each week ... this is a good reference for that ....
As we are always arguing which car(s) to use ...

Now someone please put it in Excel ... pretty please :dopey:

Im glad being helpfull =D.
Im going to update this list next week.

The fiction and road car parts are arbitrary, because we dont have an specific division or reference for them. But the real part is based on motorsports websites.
I dont know how to do a excel and google spreadsheat versions sadly. Somebody else got do it.

Thanks larsh, I did put it on the first post.
