GT7 End-of-Life: Preserve the 1.70 Physics as an Optional Legacy Mode

GT Sport set an interesting precedent: when its online services were shut down, Polyphony Digital released a final update that allowed most of the game to remain playable offline. Thank you very much Polyphony Digital 🙏

This made me think about the eventual end of life of Gran Turismo 7.

If GT7 receives a similar final offline update one day, I would really like Polyphony Digital to consider preserving the physics from version 1.70 as an optional Legacy Physics mode, alongside whatever the final physics model of GT7 will be.

The 1.71 update significantly changed the way the cars behave. Some players prefer the newer physics, and that’s perfectly fine. But others, myself included, preferred the driving feel before 1.71. There is also another issue: many of us spent a considerable amount of time tuning cars around the previous physics model, and those setups were affected by the change.

I’m NOT suggesting that Polyphony should replace the current physics or force everyone back to 1.70. Quite the opposite: give the player a choice.

For example:

Physics

  • Legacy (GT7 1.70)
  • Current / Final

This would obviously be intended for offline play. Online events, leaderboards and competitive modes would continue to use a single physics model while the servers remain active.

When GT7 eventually reaches the end of its online life, preserving an earlier physics model would also preserve a part of the game’s history. GT7 has evolved considerably since its release, and physics are a much more fundamental part of that evolution than cars, tracks or graphical changes.

GT Sport showed that Polyphony is willing to preserve a Gran Turismo game after its servers close. I hope that when GT7’s turn eventually comes, they will consider going one step further and preserve different parts of its driving experience as well.
