If your 5th gear never seems long enough and your 6th gear shifts down to unusable rpms, lower your final drive ratio. The cars do not seem to recognize a gear ratio out of the original boundaries. If your 5th gear goes from 1.1 to 1.4 on the transmission when you fist equip it, the car will not recognize any gear ratio smaller than 1.1. To make it work, you need to lower the final gear ratio so that all of your gears are within the original range for the speed you want to go. The spec sheet will let you make 5th gear smaller than the car will recognize in game.
