I wasn't quite sure where to post this topic, but thought it fit best under general rumble strip discussion.

I was reading the abc news website this morning, and found this article.Hot video games may be too real for parents Knowing the range of ages that visit this website, I wanted to gather some thoughts about the article, and weather or not the reporter had done competant research. I've seen and played this game for a few minutes, not enough time to really indulge myself, though. My wife has tried to convince me to pick this game up, as it might get GT3 out of the PS2.

Does this game really measure up to the bad publicity it gets? Has Rockstar games gone overboard with the game? Does the graphic nature of the game? Is it really corrupting the young gamers?

I can remember when I was younger, running through the woods witha fake gun yelling BANG! BANG! at friends. Hours on end. Kids that I went to school with were hunting as soon as they could find their way around through the woods. Is killing and gutting a deer, ripping entrails from it's still warm body as bad or worse than playing a game where you kill a prostitute? How many of you remember "Red Dawn" when C. Thomas Howell drinks the blood of his first deer killed? Many of my friends did the same thing. Growing up in Backwoods Vermont has its rituals.

What are others thoughts on this game? Will it get banned? When do you think it will? Didn't we have this same group of concerned people in a furor over "Castle Wolfenstein" when it first came out? In ten years will the game consoles be virtual reality where you can do the same thing?

I was 17 when I joined the Army, was handed an automatic rifle, with real ammunition, and told to point at a paper target shaped like a man, and kill it. Bayonet exercises where I was told "Hold onto your anger, and use it to rip that dummy apart". This didn't mentally unhinge me and start an echo in my brain that years later, I'll have a desire to sneak around in the dark, stabbing people.

Most importantly, do you believe that GTA-3 is one step down the ladder bringing us further into dantes circles of hell?

Thanks for additional input.

DA - Wow, a thought provoking post. :) Nice.

Anyways, yes, I would say that I think the game does go overboard, by a LONG ways. But, that being said, I own the game and have spent many an hour hiding on the top of a parking garage and taking potshots at pedestrians with a rifle. No, it hasn't made me a more violent person, however, it is going to give more "ammunition" (so to speak) to the various politicians and such who look to ban these games.

Yes, it is way overboard, but as with anything, doing something that is "taboo" is where the appeal is. I certainly don't think it's particularily healthy for people to go escape from reality (which is what video games are intended for) by going and playing a realistic game where they kill citizens and/or police.

So, I'm a huge hypocrite - Yes, the game crossed the line (much like Carmageddon did years ago) but  I love playing it and would recommend it to anyone who is an adult. If I had kids and found 'em playing it, I imagine I'd banish them to their room forever.

yeah i dont think it should be banned but i think if Rockstar makes gta4 it should be less violent because ive played it and with a sniper you can shoot off someones arm
