GTForcePro clearance?

(If I should post this somewhere else, just tell me nicely.) I've been wanting a GTForcePro steering wheel for a while, especially now that I have Prologue. But the main thing that's making me hisitate about it is that I can't think of any good way to mount it on something. If I could just find a good mount for it, I would buy the thing as soon as I got the money.

But today I got a great idea about it. I can use a TV tray. So I went to get a TV tray to check it out, and it's the perfect height, and the pedals can be placed nicely. But there's one problem: there's a substantial block of wood right in the middle where I would mount the wheel that holds the cross support in place. It's 5"x3/4"x1 1/4", and 1/4" from the edge of the tray. So can anyone tell me if I'll be able to mount a wheel on this TV tray?
 
I believe there is a lap support, so you can hold the wheel between thine thighs.
 
Problem with using a lap support: The damn thing moves around too much. I tried to get used to it (lap support) on the Driving Force, but there's way too much force feedback..

You'll be fine with the lap support, IF you don't use the force feedback.. Otherwise, get a desk or like you mentioned a TV tray.

(If the top of the tray's too thin, get two small pieces of wood.... shim it under. Perfect!)

If you're going to use this wheel with a lap support or a TV tray, you might as well get a cheaper wheel! Not only will you miss out on the subtleties of the force feedback, I think you will also get too frustrated trying to use it. This wheel demands a solid mount for it with the strong forces it produces and the sometimes frantic jerking of the wheel that the driver needs to perform when you're driving on the edge. Unless your TV tray is bolted to the ground, it's pretty pointless.

Yeah its crap, my old V3 wheel was more secure, Driving Force lap attachment u have to try & crush it between ur legs else its moves too much. Which isn't a pleasant experience :lol:
 
So for those of us who don't happen to have a desk parked in front of our TV, what would people suggest we do in order to make good use of the wheel?
 
the US version of FORCE PRO does NOT come with lap support thingie.

so you WILL have to have something to put it on.

I personally have a homemade cockpit setup that I used for Force wheel and it works fine with it. I will upgrade it once I have some time.

The wheel feels great :)
 
8400, this is a fairly sturdy TV tray. 3/4" inches is the thinnest the wood gets, and it doesn't really move around that much. It's not by any means as good as a desk, but a desk in the middle of the living room isn't exactly convenient...This was the best idea I've come up with so far. So do you really think the GTFP won't be worth it on my TV tray? I wish I could rent one someplace...
 
Well, that sounds like a stronger TV tray than I imagined. But what is the footprint of it and do you have any way to fasten to the floor or your chair? Because I'm thinking it's probably 15" x 24" at best, and about 3 feet high, so what's going to keep it from rocking back and forth when you're sawing at that wheel? Ideally the wheel is mounted to something that is also connected to the seat you are in so your weight holds the whole thing steady. Someone on this forum uses an ironing board and says it works pretty well because it can be set up low to the ground which also makes the platform very wide and stable. Do you have one of those?
If you're really into it you should consider a racing cockpit, you can even build it yourself. It's well worth it if you can afford it.
 
Just a suggestion: I´ve been using my ironing board with the old GT Wheel and it works perfectly. No rearranging of your living room furniture, fast to put up and down ...
 
An ironing board just doesn't seem like it would work...I'd think it sits to high to be usable. Because the ironing board comes up to about waist height, while the TV tray comes to about mid-thigh, which seems to be perfect. And I'd LOVE to have a racing cockpit, but I don't have the tools to build one, and they're too expensive to buy.
 
Well my boards height is adjustable. So it´s pas de probleme :)

I use this too, and ALL ironing boards that I've EVER seen are height adjustable. As long as you can lean it against something (like the place where the tv stands), it works very well. (y) I even use it with my desk.

The better you steer, the less stable your mounting area needs to be btw, the excess movement you cause usually means you're doing things to the wheel that have nothing to do with steering. In the end, all it needs is to be prevented from moving downwards - all other directions the wheel wants to move it in comes from you pushing it in that direction needlessly. :)

However, the Driving Force Pro is very well equipped to fit all sorts of mounting surfaces, from extremely thin (0.5cm is still no problem) to quite thick. It has extra blocks on the mounts that can be removed easily and will give you extra locking space. Without them, you can do at least 2 inches, and probably a little more (don't have a measure here atm). I think you will be able to mount it easily just about anywhere.

Another advantage is that the bottom of the surface you mount it on only needs to be about 2 inches deep as well. It's a great wheel.

Awin, thanks for your input. My ironing board probably is height adjustable, come to think of it, but it's still less stable than the TV tray, I think. In any case, with the information I have now, I'm much less hesitant to buy a wheel. And since my GT Concept is going to be unplayable on my system, even with Swap Magic, I'll probably sell that (and maybe something else) to put towards my wheel purchace.

It might BUT I wouldn't even consider using it with the DFP. The force feedback for the new wheel is twice as powerful (plus some) as the original driving force. But if you would like a lap attachment, make one. Make one in the shape of an I-beam. I have one that I use when I take the wheel other places, and it works perfectly.

Some thing like that. The top peice only needs to be like two inches wide for the wheel to grip to. And the middle would be two 2X4's screwed together. And the bottomw would be just some left over from the top peice, to use the weight of your legs for extra support. It works out nicely.

Why would you say that? If it's a legal copy and your TV can handle it, you have no problem.
