There's a new ultra-light car on the block -- and it's very affordable.

Following a good reception at Autosport last week, GTM has decided to build a road legal version of the 40TR. Another motivation is because it's the company's 40th anniversary.

Powered by a two-litre 220bhp Type R Honda engine that can also run on bio-fuel, the 650kg car's said to achieve 0-60mph in under four seconds and to hit a top speed of over 150mph. It features an exposed aluminium superstructure and has - er - challenging looks.

The two-seater will be on the tarmac by the summer, while customers for the original track and race models have only to wait until mid-March.

GTM Cars, which employs eight people at its Coventry based headquarters has invested £250,000 to bring the project to fruition and has designed the 40TR in conjunction with another local company, Stadco Engineering.

The 40TR which is expected to cost a very reasonable £14,000 to £16,000, and is the fourth model in GTM’s stable, sitting alongside the Ballista, launched at Autosport 2006. That model also starts production in June this year.

The Libra sports car was launched in 1998 and the Spyder convertible was launched in 2002.

GTM boss Lloyd Taylor said: “We are delighted with the enthusiastic response to a road legal version of the GTM 40TR from visitors to Autosport. Along with the track and race version it will offer enthusiasts something different with its ultra light construction. It is extremely fast and superb value for money -- and it’s made in the Midlands.”

It may not be pretty but when you're driving it, why would you care? Watch out Ariel Atom...

Piston heads don't like hot linking ;).

Have you not noticed that you can't hotlink from Piston Heads?

I guess the image must be cached so it shows up for you.

I preferred those logos anyway! What the hell are they thinking?:

*edit*

Tree'd :grumpy:

It looks like a child's plaything. And like it has more drag than a paratrooper's 'chute.

Watch out Ariel Atom...

Powered by a two litre, 245hp Type R Honda engine, the 460kg, 0-60mph in under three seconds Ariel Atom says "Why?"

I'm also a little curious how the light-less, slick-tyred monstrosity is "road legal"...

I think the design department was slacking off and when called to show the new model he had been working on he quickly shoved some bits of meccano together and came up with that.

Spec....

the one in the pictures is not, that's the original track only car, they said if they recieved enough interest they would consider building a raod legal version. They somehow have recieved engouh interest (they mustn't have needed much) and have now said they will build a road legal model. They haven't built it yet though.

...Yeah, thats definitely NOT legal in America...

Damn that's ugly. Looks like it is a Lego Technic (sp?) model or something.

The Atom is definitely much nicer, but if this were importable for under 25k, I'd love to import one as a track car. The Atom would cost a minimum of about 50k to do so.

I thought the Atom started at $35k in the US. As for this costing under $25k to import, at £14k to buy from here that's already nearly $28k and all you've done is bought the car which is still in Britain, you haven't touched import fees yet.

I've never been a fan of how any of these 'skelatal' track-day type cars look - Lotus 340R or Atom, but godamn this thing has brought to the party a whole new level of ugly. :yuck:

You don't need to import the Atom. Brammo Motorsports build it in the US.

That thing is, by far, the ugliest car I have ever seen.

On the other hand... I'm thinking it'd make a pretty good platform to put custom bodywork on.
