1956 Mercedes SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

  • Total voters

If it's so "Legendary," Why Haven't I heard of it until it came up in this thread? I know about the roadster SLRs (like 722,) but know nothing of this car.

I agree, I hadn't heard much about it either.

If you are interested though wikipedia has a decent write up on it explaining it's importance and history:

I've heard of the 300SL, but I had never heard of this particular car. The 300SL has got a history as one of the most glorious cars ever, and this particular car shows it.

Sub-Zero

JCE
Now that is one beautiful car. How can that not be subzero?

The thing is, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find myself quite often agreeing with you, so it's not just me being an ass, but the headlights look goofy, the deliberate flare above the front wheels is ugly and out of place, the exhausts are still daft even without a massive silencer, the driver's canopy is too small in relation to the rest of the car, and that supplementary lump on the hood looks out of place and without much point.

It's not a pretty car, and no doubt before this poll most people wouldn't have even heard of the thing. People are just seeing "300SL race car" and voting sub-zero. I don't intend to stir too much controversy but it's no different from shepherds leading a flock. By any reasonable standards it's not a very cool car, but because the 300SL exists and because people are suckers for race cars, it comes out sub-zero.

I voted meh, bordering on uncool.

Why?

-Ugly
-Never heard of it (neutral)
-Doesn't interest me all that much
-Ugly

It's not really an SL race car from what I understand...it's an SLR road car. The '50s equivalent of the Toyota GT-ONE road car.

Objectively I can definitely see that this could be beauty in the eye of the beholder. Aesthetically I could nitpick, but, I dunno. Everyone has a car that may not be aesthetically pleasing but they think its beautiful but others think its ghastly. For me an example of this is the Alfa 8C. I just think its too busy and doesn't touch my happy spot. :D Most people think its sex on wheels. I don't. (I do however love the noise it makes)

For me the vote wasn't following the flock. To me any race car from the early half of last century is cool. Old world technology and style. And almost any old Benz to me is Subzero. The 300SL itself is one of the top 5 cars for me of all time. Add the 50's race car quotient and you have a subzero (x2 lol). I possibly think I might be in the small minority of people that are leading this "flock" on the Subzero vote.

:D

While I can't argue about it being an attractive car (it's a subjective thing), maybe people do genuinely see it being that cool. I know I thought it was a stunning machine before any of this ever started. Maybe now that people are aware of it and its history, and voting as they see fit. And I'm not quite understanding your point about the 300SL existing and it being a "race car". I don't think we ever look at a car as just...a car in itself, with no heritage, no lineage no influence whatsoever. I find it very attractive, as well as unusual and interesting (not just a fusion of two of most legendary Mercedes-Benzes). And because of people not being aware of its existence, I find just adds to it in my mind.

It’s a high performance Gullwing Benz. A normal Benz would have been Sub Zero but this is 10 times cooler than the standard one. I mean if the normal one ended up in Lord Kelvin’s Ice Box this one deserves to be in there with it. Maybe even its own higher category but will just see how this one compares in the end to the 300SLs score of:
86 Sub zeros
23 cools
1 uncool
0 seriously uncool

Don't forget to dismiss the "meh" votes since they don't count.
