I actually like the first generation of Saturns, they're good cars. But they're not cool, at least not yet.

They were ok, sadly engine parts are not easy to get anymore, so usually once they die the scrap yard calleth.

Uncool, if any are left in 10 years that could change though.

This was the car that by itself nearly bankrupted GM around 1992. And besides that the only people who bought them were college girls and Saturn fans.

That they were pretty decent by themselves is almost irrelevant.

There's nothing really that bad about it, it's much better than a Beretta or Sunbird, and more competitive with import coupes (Paseo, Civic coupe). Still, it's a generic 90's car that's nothing noteworthy.

The problem is that GM already had a car they could and did sell (under a new brand even!) in 1990 that was much better than all but the top shelf J-Body or N-Body models. And they didn't Toyota pay 5 billion dollars to make it.
And GM owned two Japanese car manufacturers who could also have built them (or adapted them) a car to sell that was better than the J-Body of N-Body, like Ford had Mazda do with the Escort. Which also probably wouldn't have cost 5 billion dollars.
Or they could have made the GM2900 platform another "world car" and replaced the J-Body everywhere in 1988 when they did so in Europe, and I suspect the third generation Vauxhall Cavalier also didn't cost 5 billion dollars.

Another piece of 1990s GM junk that joins much of their offerings in purgatory.

My brother had one of these. It was the definition of Point A to Point B transportation in neither style nor comfort.

But it beat taking the bus.

Still earns it an Uncool.

I was going to say uncool, then I remembered it has pop up headlights, so seriously uncool. Weirdly I like them though, as with most Saturns.
