Well I mean if it was orange to be obnoxious I could see your point, but considering the company and the reasoning for the color and what the cars were built in honor of...yeah. Then again I can see all that being SU since many people just seem to know McLaren by word of mouth and because it built the fastest car once upon a time.

A car being a shade of orange that shares with prestigious race cars doesn't make it come across any cooler driving down the street.

Even non-car people would likely be in awe of this. It's not ostentatious, despite the wing and colour. It's not too big, it's not especially obvious what it is and it's got the archetypal supercar shape down to a tee.

Sub Zero.

Don't see why not, the car has a much heritage to the McLaren name as the F1 cars of the 60s that share the same color, our differing views on how much or not we appreciate the color shouldn't be withstanding of it being cool.

However, I did give reasons why I could see it uncool in my post, not sure if you saw that. Also 2 of these cars aren't this color anyways.

Too me I've found the LM the nicest of the bunch to be honest, the others haven't aged nearly as well I think and to me that's why the car is still a stand out and cool.

Because Joe on the street seeing this pass by doesn't know that; instead what he sees is an orange car with wings on it.

I had no clue about the other colours, doesn't exactly help the only colour in the OP is orange, though...

I'd say otherwise.

The OG F1 actually looks best compared to the LM and the others, to me at least.

Which if you read my initial post to you is exactly what I said, and why I said it would be considered uncool, and how I can see it being uncool. As for the other colors, that fall on the person who put it up for nomination, @weigert did his job.

I'd say otherwise.

Perfectly fine, I say the original is second best, because it just looks dated and plain jane really compared to the others. I like the fact that Gordon and other McLaren workers went back and revised the car, because the way the front section is on the original isn't nearly as pleasing to me as the others. The rest of the car though is classic even if dated.

You'd have to ask the Sultan for any decent shots of his pair of custom painted LMs. This doesn't cut it in terms of OP image quality.

Frankly I'm a fan of the Papaya Orange the majority were painted in. Nowhere near as slick as the originals otherwise even if the GTR aero bits don't look out of place.

Low Cool.

I know. I'm just countering your justifications of the colour with my reasoning.

I never said it was anything to do with @Wiegert, more the original curator of the submission.

Which basically makes the whole other colour thing moot as they may as well not even exist being in the hands of him.

No problem with that, just wanted to make sure you saw my entire post and not the parts you disagreed with.

Which is exactly what I said, and no I never claimed you were blaming him, just saying that he did his job and the nominator could have done a bit more.

No just means if you have the money and McLaren blessing you're free to paint it whatever you want, thus color taste shouldn't be withstanding.

They weren't officially provided - they were a special order, much the same way of his other cars in his collection. That doesn't constitute towards this car from where I stand - it's not a colour officially offered for the car, therefore doesn't really dictate towards my stance on the regular "consumer level" vehicle.

I'm not sure where you're going with this in all honesty.

That something as interchangeable as color shouldn't be a sole bearing on the cars factor of cool or not, that simple. Having to explain the color, why only so many of these were built, or why it differs from the original and the fact there is a longtail version, all contribute to how things become uncool.

But "it's a shade of bright orange SU", just strike me odd. Clearly we differ and that's fine, just found it to be interesting conversation.

I never said it was just the colour though - I also mentioned the functional wings. Bare in mind I voted the original SZ, so I'm not trying to be edgy or anything.

Ah I never thought that, I wouldn't care either way. As I said interesting conversation on differing taste is all.

I admit, I didn't really think much of the Mclaren F1 until I saw one in person, I'm just not in to the hypercars. Seeing one for the first time though (a white one, with LM style kit/ wing) really left an impression. Something about seeing something so rare and legendary just blew my mind.

Since there's only 3 or 5 or whatever of these and they were pretty much instantly considered priceless even compared to the regular F1, do any of these actually get used like the F1 still tends to?

No idea about regularly, but I still have the memory of this magazine test as the first thought when I hear of the LM. I could've swore Dickie Meaden was involved with it, though: I'm reasonably sure he worked at CAR at the time, since PC would've just closed up.

My vote? Exceptions are always needed. This is one of those times. SZ.
