Um... thanks? I never needed your advice.. But you obviously don't get it as you voted 'Cool' for the Cadillac Chimariaandquwgthing.

I've never seen that car, so I can't see anyone driving it. So to me it's a robot car. Thats cool!! Ok maybe I'm not the right guy to vote on that poll...

Mechanically unstable, not the greatest of driving cars, not a very fast vehicle as far as top speed or acceleration, but for some reason, these cars still appeal to me. COOL

Out of my 22 rules, 4 apply. 3 pros and 1 cons. 3 out of 4 = 75% = Uncool (If it had just 0.01% more it would be cool, it's almost cool :indiff:.)

Hard to say...

I've never sat in or driven the car, so I can't have an opinion on the way it drives.

It doesn't look quite as good as earlier Spitfires... and... late 70's, I can think of quite a few sportscars from that time that were much better... (US spec bumpers = ewww)

I'm fenced on this one.

Sub Zero. I like the looks and the "tiny engine that could"-philosophy that was photocopied by MX-5 and the like. It's also very small and has good all round visibility if the top is down.

It's like you started the hostility, though.

Um, no. Don't take your problems out on me. It's a statistic, so it isn't representative of the entire sample. I was just pointing it out because it's relevant. The whole reason i mentioned that it was a statistic was so people wouldn't think i was bad mouthing anyone.

If you want to be upset with anyone, let it out on Paul Miniard. He's the one who taught me the statistic.

cool, 65% Looks small enough that you can fit it into a closet. Just empty the oil and gas and wash the rest out.

Rather pleasantly surprised with the results from this, hadnt expected to see any sub zero votes for a start! But getting over 75% of the votes for cool or sub zero...

You do realize that you have never actually posted this alleged study you're referring to? You never actually said it was a real study? You simply posted "it's not opinion, it's fact", which is a common tool used by many people.

If you would actually post anything that points to any kind of real study anywhere, perhaps people might not think you're making crap up to support your own hostile opinion.

I'll buy that, but frankly, singling out the poor MGB is not fair - everything sucked in the '70s.

By everything I assume you mean the British cars

Coz the BMW 2002, Alfa GTV, Datsun 510, Ford Escort Mark I etc definitely, didn't suck. And especially not the Mercedes 300SEL 6.3.
I'm kinda partial to the 71 Dodge Challenger, Jag XJ6 Series 1, 1st gen Toyota Celica and 2000GT etc as well. I could throw in the Gelandewagen and International Scout as well, but I think you get the point.

Otherwise you are right, pretty much everything else sucked.

You should take responsibility for things you say, wrong or right, even if you're just parroting what someone else has told you. You have chosen to take the message as your own by repeating it, so don't try to dodge the repercussions and pretend you're an innocent bystander.

Well of course I agree that male owners of convertibles are usually sexually frustrated. I tend to agree with things that are statistically true. But it's still a statistic, not a recurrence. What i was trying to point out is that i didn't base the opinion on my own pre-conceived notions, so i'm not the one to be mad at.

And no, i can't provide proof of the survey, nor do i have to. My Consumer Behavior teacher told it to my class in passing, and if you choose to believe that i'm lying then uh...ok.

What's wrong with MGs? I mean besides the whole British Labour and Lucas electricals thing. I've seen a couple of MGBs with 6-cylinder Camaro or Mustang swaps that are very fun and nice cars indeed.

Apologies for the late response, I didn't get around to visiting this thread again after I posted. I really like MGs actually, and a nice MGB GT especially (very pretty, like a miniature E-Type, and extra cool given that you could get it with 6 or 8 cylinders), a classic Magnette or the gorgeous MGA. I also like the last few MGs, the ZR, ZS and ZT, even though they were tarted-up Rovers. However, they do all have a bit of an image problem. As The Cracker mentioned, they're fairly ubiquitous and often driven by bearded old men (not that there's anything wrong with being bearded, I say as a beard user myself) which isn't the most exciting image.

And no, i can't provide proof of the survey, nor do i have to. My Consumer Behavior teacher told it to my class in passing, and if you choose to believe that i'm lying then uh...ok.

I'm sure you're telling the truth if you're simply repeating what you've heard, but it sounds rather like your teacher is talking out of his arse...

Did I personally buy a convertible because I'm sexually frustrated? Not really, I'm getting plenty, thanks. I bought it because I wanted a sports car because I'm still young so didn't want something depressingly dull.

Of course, given that I drive a Miata your teacher probably thinks I bought it because I like a bit of man lovin'

Really been trying to stay out of this, but what the hell...

Statistics can be made to say what ever you want them to say. Say I was to do a study trying to prove that everyone who eats at McDonalds is overweight. I then walk up to 9 fat people and one thin one. you get the results that show your point, ie 90% of McDonalds customers are over weight.
Conversely if I wanted to prove the opposite, I'd just survey 9 thin people and one fat person and get the result that 90% of McDonalds customers are thin.

Unless a statistical survey has a clearly defined sample size (of many hundreds) covering a broad socio-economic grouping the statistic is worthless.
A stat thats just thrown off the cuff by some teacher, sorry dont have a lot of faith in it. it sounds like the usual sort of pointless stereotype, with no basis in statistical fact.

Now for the point,
this is a cool wall, if some stereotype makes you thing that 'all convertibles are driven by sexually frustrated men', then thats a fair reason for thinking that its an uncool car.
In the same way that I find most Ferrari's uncool because they are all driven by Footballers or other idiots.

But coming out with statistics to prove it (especially ones that cant be backed up with any kind of fact) just makes you appear a little foolish. Even more so when I would say that there are a fair number of people on this forum who own a convertible (myself included), and while I cant speak for the others...............

Please note my bold lettering. I know statistics are statistical.

My professor has a Ph.D in Consumer Behavior. He's a Knight Ridder Eminent Scholar. He has written textbooks. He knows what he's talking about.

Doesn't mean he isn't talking out of his arse. Plenty of my professers in both the degrees I've done have at some stage. One of my journalism professors even mistook the author of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, which is akin to a mathematics lecturer forgetting long division.

Honestly, I don't care what silly stuff you care to believe. But if you believe it and say it in public, have the backbone to either back it up or admit you're wrong if you're called on it.

And no, i can't provide proof of the survey, nor do i have to. My Consumer Behavior teacher told it to my class in passing,

Ok. Then don't act surprised or offended when people don't take the things you say seriously.

and if you choose to believe that i'm lying then uh...ok.

What I choose to believe about your comment is incompatible with the AUP, so I'm keeping it to myself.

The statement might be right, it might be wrong.
There is no sense in going on all day long.
It might be truth or it might be a lie.
Either way, this thread is destined to die.
