@ amp88 : I totally agree with you. In the other hand, I had a firewall (ZoneAlarm) on my father's computer. Now you will surely understand that running a firewall such as ZoneAlarm on a Pentium II 350mhz is quite hard. It's even harder with only 128MB RAM on WinME. About my own computer, I didn't feel it was necessary to have one. It seems I was wrong.
By the way, my friend runs his own PC without any active anti-virus and firewall. He doesn't have problem. Although, I think he format a bit more frequently than me! :)

Having a low spec PC is a bit of a pain, I agree. Perhaps you could get your dad to buy a hardware firewall (router), then the software firewall (ZoneAlarm) will only have to block outgoing packets, it won't need to check incoming.

It's very possible to run a PC without an anti-virus or firewall, especially when it's behind a router or it's only used by experienced users. Unfortunately, most PCs are used by inexperienced people or by experienced people with families. Avoiding the problems associated with virii, spyware and adware are fairly easy. Using a (reasonably) secure browser (e.g. Firefox) and employing some common sense should keep the PC clean. Avoiding hackers or hack attempts without a firewall is a bit more difficult (without a router anyway).

edit: If you haven't already, give Spyware Blaster a shot...It stops spyware/adware/etc from ever getting to your PC.

I never get a spyware of this level before. The last big one I had is a CoolWebSearch (CWS). That one was just showing annoying popup and it ended into a virus that I manage to remove with external help. Nothing has manage to make any damage to my PC, it's my first time and will never happen again, you have my words!

Btw, I just read the readme.txt that was coming with MediaGateway.exe. It really comes from GTP, I'm sorry about that Jordan.

I uninstall twice this ****, it came back twice. And the second time, it also erased my own folder in "My docs and Settings". Would be surprising if there is anyway to recover all that stuff. The only possibility is Media Gateway created a backup file somewhere as uninstalling protection.

Maybe I miss something somewhere. But one thing is sure : the it poped out of no-where while I was surfing here. There's no doubt about it. :guilty:
You've had a lot of spyware installed upon your computer - why don't you think one of those programs could be responsible for installing it? Spyware installs more spyware, and it happens all the time. I really don't think that came from GTPlanet, because ads with ActiveX prompts are explicitly blocked, and that's besides the fact that code for pop-ups simply does not exist anywhere on the page that a logged in user should be seeing. Just because you get a pop-up on a site does not mean it came from that site!

jordan brings up a very good point. Spyware can create its own generated popups using ie as a crutch. if you can read an html file oin your computer than why not a pop up? perhaps it downloads a updated pack of popups each time internet connection is present. this would get around only scanning outgoing data

Also wouldnt more people have this problem if it came from GTP?

Sounds like your a 1 off from many many members, its bad that you got all that but i dont think it came from GTP.

after trusting the site, since i used for a while, i downloaded the smilies...

maybe that was very :dunce: :dunce: :dunce: and know i can´t delete it... at least i didn´t run the application...

i know it was very dumb, i never install things from banners, but... anydoby else did the same and got problems?

wtf?? Just got that window... :dunce:
