Dirt 3
Dirt 3 launched in August 2011, just under 2 years after Dirt 2, and was the first game to completely remove the Colin McRae name from the title. Dirt 3 took the concepts that Dirt 2 had introduced, and dialled them up to 11. Featuring a wide variety of off road motorsport disciplines, such as rally, rallycross, rally raid, landrush/hill climb, stadium trucks and buggies and the inclusion of the ever growing in popularity, gymkhana.
Ken Block was a focal point for the game, heavily drawing on him as a main character guide through the game and featuring a whole host of his machinery from his WRC Ford Focus to various specifications of his Gymkhana machinery. The main Dirt Tour career mode saw you start at the bottom with no reputation, and challenging you to complete individual tours to progress and become the world champion. Occasional special events cropped up as well which provided unique challenges, such as the Top Gear inspired Bobsleigh challenge in Norway where you must pilot the Mini Countryman WRC down a rally run in parallel to a bobsleigh run.
The game featured 11 locations, and saw an increased presence for rallying after traditional rallying took a bit of a backseat in Dirt 2. locations such as Kenya, Michigan, Norway and Finland featured at launch, with Monte Carlo being added as a DLC later on. The list of rally cars was also very strong, covering everything from the 60s with the Lancia Fulvia, Mini Cooper and Alpine A110, all the way to the Pro class which featured up to date WRC machinery such as the Focus RS WRC, Fiesta WRC and C4 WRC, complete with licensed WRC liveries.
The game was positively received by media and fans alike, the gameplay and visuals being praised across the board whilst fans lauded the return of more rally content, in particular the modern WRC machinery and recognisable rally stages.
The Focus WRC was the choice for this around as the Fiesta WRC doesn't feature in EA WRC, whilst the Focus WRC was one of the key Ken Block machines early in the game and featured a wide array of official liveries. Kenya was the choice of location, it was a new location to the Dirt series and hadn't been seen in a Codemasters rally title since Colin McRae Rally 2.0.
