"Arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics.
Even if you win, you're still retarded."

Keep this in mind, fellas. It doesn't matter how right you are - if you're arguing on the Internet, no body really gives a rip. This is true simply because if someone doesn't agree with you they're only a click away from not having to worry about it anymore.

I think the quote is retarded, this thread is retarded, this site is retarded, and yes even I'm retarded... now I am just gonna click and not worry about it anymore!

you haven't seen the image that goes with that quote, i see...

even i find it stupid. and i normally like these images with a message.

Nice. A cheap laugh at the expense of somebody's child.

Oh, wait. Did I just express an opinion that may differ from someone else's?

Why that's retarded!

I think that is very true Loudmusic. It has to be one of my top 10 favorite quotes. I wish people would go by it though...

Agreeing on the internet is also like running in the Special Olympics, too then.

I'm telling Jordan you said that!

Explain please. I am rediculously slow.

Arguing and agreeing are two sides of the same coin. It would follow then that agreeing on the internet would be as "retarded" as arguing.

I'm really not sure if I agree with that quote. I think it all depends on what you are arguing about, not what medium you use to argue on.

Yeah, but how do you win at agreeing?

"Agreeing on the interenet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded."

That makes little sense.

Gotta go with the big guy here. We'd essentially invalidate the whole concept of a forum if we believed that to be true. Discussing, arguing, sharing, learning, etc. They're all part of the same thing: communication. Segmenting one facet of communication and making it "retarded" doesn't make any sense to me. Some people like to argue and are stimulated by it. Some people can't take it and always get all personal and hurt about it (and they tend to ruin things by making it ugly). It depends on your perspective I guess. I like arguing for the sake of the ideas, be it in person, on the phone, or on the internet. It's how I learn. If we all just sat around and agreed all the time, or just made vapid comments to each other things would get very boring very fast. Dissent (wich requires variety) is the spice of life. And being "only a click away from not having to worry about it anymore" is no diferent from turning off your TV, hanging up the phone, or leaving a room. I, for one, try to adhere to the same standards on line that I would in person, just a little openmindedness and respect.

But I see people who use the anonymity of the internet to be jerks and act in ways that would get their asses kicked anywhere else, and again, there are jerks everywhere and the particular opportunity afforded them to be jerks is irrelevant. They'll always find a way.

If arguing is only considered as something one person wins and the other looses, then I guess you're right. But I don't see arguing that way. Usually, at the end of an argument you have two or more people who still believe the same things they did before the argument, but that perhaps understand something or someone better, or have a broader perspective on things.

No, what it comes down to is the intelligence of the people arguing.

That is a factor, but not the most important one. How about the common courtesy, or the maturity?

No, intelligence is more important.

Who cares about courtesy and maturity?

I'd rather agrue with someone who is intelligent and overly rude and immature than someone with intelligence equalling tercel_driver who was also very courteous and mature.

A polite, mature genius would be the ideal.

I just realized, though, that I would never even dignify a dolt with an argument... so I guess it's sort of a given, among intelligent people.
