"Microsoft hands out script to movie studios, along with tough conditions
Xbox manufacturer Microsoft has begun moving forward with plans to develop its key franchise Halo for the big screen. The technology giant has been handing out copies of the script to major movie studios along with a string of tough conditions.
Earlier this week, Microsoft sent out a wave of messengers dressed as Halo lead character Master Chief to personally deliver the script - written by Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later) for $1 million - into the hands of incredulous movie studio receptionists.
According to Hollywood publication Variety, Microsoft wants the movie in production by January, indicating a 2006 launch sometime around or after the launch of Sony's PS3, leading many to suspect this will be phase two in Halo's assault on PS3 sales.
However, despite the high-profile nature of the franchise, many studios have already thrown in the towel due to harsh and tough-to-meet conditions from Microsoft.
Variety claims that Microsoft wants a $10 million advance against 15% of the movie's gross takings, with other reports saying the company is insisting on commitment to a production budget of $75 million, not including such major costs as the hiring of a director and actors.
Microsoft and creator Bungie also want to retain creative control, forcing the movie studio that eventually takes it on to stick to a strict 'bible'.
New Line and DreamWorks have reportedly already passed on the project due to the tight conditions, while any labels under the Sony Pictures group (Columbia, MGM) have been excluded from bidding altogether, which is hardly surprising given the rivalry between Microsoft and Sony in the videogames market.
However, several other companies are "potentially interested" in bidding, presumably enthused by the franchise's high profile and its sales of 13 million games worldwide." Source :- Games Radar
Well I hope they make a movie, im sure it would be good. This also means that i wont have to play Halo to enjoy the story. Bit like not reading a book and just watching the film. What do you Guys make of it?
