Why am I making this thread? Because the two series have extremely similar story lines:

- Both feature one race everyone's against (the geth in ME and Covenant in Halo)

- Both are about one person that has to save the universe (Sheperd and Master Chief)

- Both see the enemies working together to take down a bigger threat

- Both see Earth being invaded in the third game

Yeah...Halo kinda feels like a more streamlined version of ME. Hell, Halo Reach is an RPG, just like ME.

So, I guess what this thread is gonna do is be a discussion between the pros and cons of each series. It's kinda like the FM vs. GT thread, but...with Halo and ME.

I've played every Halo game except Halo Wars and am working through ME1 currently and I have played ME2...and will be playing ME3.

Personally, while the story arcs are pretty much the same, I like the freedom of Mass Effect, but Halo can be fun, too.

I said the STORYLINES were SIMILAR. Not the same. Everything else about the games besides the storylines, are different.

One is a shooter the other is an RPG.

Deferent sets of fans. IMHO.

This. 👍

When you simplify it maybe, but unless you've read the complete series scripts to Halo then who knows how ME3 or every Halo game in the future ends... We know Halo doesn't end at all and ME was started as a trilogy. Meaning Halo will never end because Microsoft has no other game to replace it as a flagship title :). This is why I love that Sony has no flagship title.

Umm...Sony has at least two flagship titles: Gran Turismo and Uncharted...I mean, GT is the best selling console exclusive franchise since Mario and Link (not kidding.) It is Sony's best selling franchise ever. And Uncharted is one of the highest rated franchises on the PS3.

And Xbox has three flagship titles: Gears of War, Halo and Forza.

But, I think I wanted to discuss the similarities between Halo and Mass Effect.

I mean, really, when you get down to the basic storylines, they're pretty close to each other. They've got the same basic elements. Both have ancient human civilizations that left behind strange technology. Both have races/weapons that want to destroy all sentient life in the universe, I'm mean...and Mass Effect's story has developed almost exactly the same as Halo:

First game: a chasing a known bad guy to a place where a new bad guy is discovered, only this new enemy has been around for centuries.

Second Game: go fight the new enemy directly and eventually get the help of the old enemy.

Third Game: new enemy attacks earth, and the hero must go and stop Earth from being destroyed.

I like Mass Effect because it's more of the RPG elements.

And Halo Reach is an RPG: it's got squad based actions, points for leveling up and credits for buying and unlocking new items. You XP points even. Only thing missing is the Magic points.

But...yeah...discuss the differences and similarities between them.

Wasn't Mass Effect a RPG with 3rd person Shooter qualities? Though Mass Effect was a flagship for the xbox also. PS3 only has Mass Effect 2.

Similarities: you go around shooting aliens with guns
Differences: everything else

👍

@nk4e: PS3 users got a "special" version of ME2 that included a short interactive comic (I believe) that summarised Mass Effect and let them make the key decisions from that game, so they can have the ME2 world roughly how they wanted it.

ME WAS a flagship series until EA bought out Bioware. I think Dragon Age was suppose to be exclusive to the 360, as well, but EA acquired Bioware in the middle of the development cycle and they released it on both PS3 and 360...and PC.

And Halo and Bioware have more in common than just shooting aliens, trust me. I'm actually surprised everyone's fighting me on this point.

Uh, SS - EA acquired Bioware in 2007, several months before the first Mass Effect was even released...

SS, you will probably find that not a lot of people will agree with you. To be honest, I have never played Halo. It simply does not appeal to me. What I have gathered from it, is that it’s essentially another FPS based in a sci-fi universe. Mass Effect is a third person action based Sci-Fi RPG. The similarities you listed sound quite broad and the game play style is very different, thus I think for these reasons, people will reject your assertion that there are a lot of similarities. That’s not to say they don’t exist, I mentioned earlier, I have never played Halo, so I’m not in a position to judge, however based on what I have both read in this thread and the very minimal knowledge I do have about Halo, I can certainly see why people will have issues with making the connection.

 Reminds me of this Alien V Avatar movie comparison. (Language warning).

Except Mass Effect was almost finished by then, and I'm sure, part of the deal with EA was that MS kept the rights to the first Mass Effect. And I'm sure they had to fight Microsoft to get Mass Effect 2 on the PS3.

And all I'm saying is the STORYLINES are pretty much the same.

For your next thread, I suggest "Gears of War vs. God of War" (similar names!) or "Katamari Damacy vs. Viva Pinata" (similar color palettes!)

Just make sure you get plenty of bias and misinformation about major publishers and Microsoft in there to keep it consistent.
