X06: New Halo Game Revealed
Halo Wars takes the series to its roots: real-time strategy.
by David Adams
September 27, 2006 - At its X06 event in Barcelona, Microsoft announced Halo Wars, a real-time strategy title from developer Ensemble Studios (Age of Empires) set -- you guessed it! -- in the Halo universe. Ensemble is creating the title exclusively for the Xbox 360.

Halo Wars will put players in command of the human UNSC forces in their first encounter against the alien Covenant.

A Halo-based RTS is a sort of homecoming for the franchise, as Halo began life at Bungie as a strategy title, not the first-person juggernaut it eventually became. Of course, the series' war-wrecked setting, with multiple factions (humans, Covenant, Flood) clashing, should lend itself nicely to real-time strategy treatment.

We'll be back with more details on Halo Wars as soon as we get 'em.

Hmmm, seems ok but...I'm not a huge fan of Strategy games, at least ones that play out like chess, I would rather just play chess.:dunce: (Not to say this won't be a good game or one worth playing)

Huzzah!

I have allready raved over the preliminary info on the game, and I love to do it again. Given that it is set to debut on the 360, one can guess that it will indeed it will be our tie-over untill Halo 3 is released next year. Although there isn't a set date, I would be hoping that it could hit the streets before next-summer, although that may be wishful thinking.

...I'm a HUGE RTS fan, and although I generally stick to PC-based titles, I'm willing to give this one a try. It all sounds quite exciting, hopefully filling fans in on a bit of story in the game, and a bit more background as to how things happened before the fall of Reach, etc.

Did you see the trailer?

Wow! Pretty!

I noticed that a lot of the equipment that was taken out of Halo and Halo 2 made it's way into the game, based uppon drawings and models from the Halo 2 DVD included with the special edition title. The jet-fighter things should make things interesting, as should the new command-units as well. I like the idea of a SPARTAN tactical unit, and the idea of controling entire platoons of Marines as well.

...This is going to be an awesome game, I just know it!

Halo wars is to be a "360-only" title as of right now...

That's actually kind of stupid. If they plan to make this an RTS as what IGN was saying, then it'd be better they do this on the PC.

However, if I'm wrong, and this is a new type of series where you just play a soldier instead of Master Chief, and playing the game as if it were Battlefield, then, yeah, I'd like it.

But I need to wait and see how much they plan to feature in this. It sounds really good right now, esp. with the Trailer, and could be what people wanted in Halo 2, a big battlefield.

According to the game's website (CLICK HERE) it will be a 360-only title, as it has been designed from the ground-up to work with the 360 and all the goodies it has to share. Given that it is an RTS title, it should function similarly to LOTR:BME2. Ensemble says that was the way they wanted to do it, and it looks like it will stay that way.

That said, with the future of XNA looking quite bright, I wouldn't rule-out a Vista port of the game shortly after the 360 version...

Well, that does kind of suck. However, with Vista coming, I do agree it seems possible, and I do hope so. I really, can not stand RTS' on consoles. The controllers are nothing like a mouse.

woops I made a new thread with all the excitement. Didnt see this one.
Here is what I posted in the other thread.
I am extremely excited about this!!! Halo Wars is going to be a RTS exclusive to the 360 and its by Ensemble Studios. They make Age of Empires 3 which is one of the best RTS I have ever played. :dopey: :dopey:

This is great and all but what's with the add-ons AFTER the Halo games have been made? :odd:

Multiplayer and then this? :dunce:

...This isn't an add-on, this is an entirely new game designed for the 360. It won't debut until after Halo 3 this fall, maybe after Christmas if everything stays on-schedule. This appears to be a story leading up to Halo: CE, given the greater number of SPARTAN soldiers, Elites, and a completely new terrain.

Halo Wars is an RTS and is being made by Ensemble Studios. The gameplay will be similar to Age of Empires 3 or other RTS games like Command and Conquer, red alert 2, Yuris revenge.

I absolutley loved the trailer for this.

The game is set before the HALO series, this is why there are several "master chiefs" as opposed to now, where we are the only one left.

I can't wait for this - To the people who moan about the HALO series not stopping and making us spend more money on it etc... I say bring it on, if I were to have created something as involving as the HALO series I would make myself extremely rich from it!!!!

As long as I enjoy it, I'll keep on buying the HALO stuff.

The demo is available for this game right now!! I have it queued for DL but wont be able to play until later tonight when I get out of work.

Thanks for the heads up about the Demo, just started downloading it!
Also pre-ordered the Limited Edition yesterday mainly for the Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack.

The 3 early Mythic Halo 3 maps is tempting but I will just wait because a few weeks after Halo Wars is released they will release the Mythic maps to the public. I also dont even know if I will be buying Halo Wars yet. It will all determine how good the demo is.

I played the demo for about an hour and a half last night. Only had a chance to finish the campaign the game provided with the demo.

The gameplay was very smooth and I did not see any framerate problems at all like most RTS games. The tutorial worked real well and helped pull you right into the games and the basic controls.

From what I saw in the demo this really seems to be more of a generic basic RTS compared to the AOE series or the C&C series. They seemed to be targeting beginner RTS players because from what I could see, the controls were very simple.

I was hoping this would be a lot like Age Of Empires but it really isnt like it at all. From what I could see there really isnt resource gathering like AOE or C&C. In AOE people would go out to gather rocks, trees or food. In C&C ore miners would collect or. In HW the base actually is the main resource gathering and you just produce soldiers. This is closer to the C&C series with that kind of resource gathering. The base building is also quite minimal. The base in the demo allowed 4 turrets to be built in pre-set locations. In C&C and AOE you could build as much defensive towers as you wanted anywhere you wanted. It allowed up to 30 soldiers or about 7 scorpions. I am sure the full game will allow more than that.

Each soldier or vehicle also has 2 fighting options. X button or Y button. For the soldiers that will switch them from shooting to throwing grenades. For the warthog it switches from the turret to just simply running them over which was a lot of fun to wipe out 5 or 6 grunts instantly.

Now the best part of the game that blew my mind. The cinemas are phenomenal!!! I really dont understand the story at all but some of the cinemas actually look like real people. Quite possibly some of the best cinemas I have seen in any of the games on the 360. The voice acting is also really good. Just about as good as Mass Effect voice acting. The Halo Wars cinemas make the Halo series cinemas look like garbage. I just wish I could understand the story better so I could truly appreciate it.

Overall the game is fun but seems to be aimed toward beginner RTS gamers. Its very colorful with amazing cinemas and its easy to pick up and play which should target a wide variety of players and might even get people into RTS games that have never played them before. I will probably buy at least one copy and rent the other so my gf and I can play through the co-op campaign together. Then hopefully play some skirmish against the AI. Looking forward to seeing what the full game has to offer.

I have the demo too. For what it is, I was a bit shaky to start off, but being the Age of Empires II veteran that I am, I quickly got up to speed. Personally, it's very good, basically Halo meets AOE and I have to say it works quite well!
