Hi,

My dads laptop recieved the following area about a week ago. When starting it says press F1 to resume but when it gets to the Windows XP loading screen it restarts. I'm guessing that the hard drive is on it's last legs. I also know that the S.M.A.R.T feature in the BIOS is stopping it from booting.

I want to turn off the smart option but the option is greyed out in the BIOS. The BIOS is American Megatrends. I just wanted to see if I could boot it up one last time to recover some of the data.

Any ideas?

I am in no way an authority on this, but could the drive be pulled, made a slave and plugged into a desktop?

I'll look into. I don't know too much about the the way laptops are built, or if they use the same kind of connectors as found in a standard PC.

I'm guessing there will be some form of adapter required. I'd be willing to bet that the information you want to save is worth more than the price of the adapter. :D I couldn't imagine it'd be too expensive.

I've just done a bit of Googling. Found out that there is an adapter, just a case of finding somewhere that stocks them.

You should be able to get a cable at any component retailer. Try NewEgg or eBuyer.

It's a 2.5" IDE cable that you need. From memory, the drive can take power from a desktop's floppy drive power lead.
