hard drive question

I'm a little confused on this and I couldnt find this answer researching it, maybe you guys can help.

I recently did a new build with windows 8 on a new 1tb hdd, I have an old 400gb hdd with windows 7 on it....

If I wanted to transfer files from my old 400gb to the new 1tb, is it possible?
or can I only use the 400gb as a secondary hdd with no way of accessing the old files on it?

how would I go about doing this?
Is it as simple as installing it?

If you plug the old drive into the PC and make sure it is not connected to a SATA port lower than the 1tb you should boot into windows and be able to get your files off it.

Then you can format it and use it as a secondary drive.

The folder that contains all your files is in X:\users\<profile name>\

X= the 400gb drive letter.
