I find it somewhat intriguing that there's no thread to discuss this movie here, especially considering the attention some plotless blockbusters get (Transformers 3 being a good example).

Although I'm not a kid, or even a young adult, I started reading the HP books because my oldest daughter told me I would like it (I'm a huge Tolkien fan, she thought it should be similar ).

Well, HP is no Bilbo Baggins and JKRowling is no JRR Tolkien, but I found the books to be good enough to make me read all of them. And, the last two of the series ("Half Blood Prince" and "Deathly Hallows") I found to be quite good books, both in their storyline structure and in their "inner" quality about what values, choices, principles, sacrifices and overall the sense that there is good and there is evil, there is also lots of in-between ... well, my basic English doesn't allow me to say more, but you get the picture. They're not "black&white" simple kids stories, quite the contrary.

Of course the movies were condensed from the books, and lots was lost. Also, starting with 11 year-old kids as leading characters meant that you wouldn't be able to have the BEST of the BEST actors throughout the series.
But in the end, and all things considered, I regard the collection of movies to be a decent effort by WB, certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

Speaking of actors, it was a pity that Richard Harris died after 2 movies, I had and have HUGE respect for his work and also think his portrayal of Dumbledore (even if we only saw the "fatherish-Dumbledore" when HP had 11 and 12 years) was better than the current one became. And I do know Richard Harris could turn very DARK also, so I'm suyre he would be a great Dumbledore in the later-darker movies.

Anyway, I'm very much interested in watchiing the last HP movie, are you? Are you not? Why?

Just for the fun, here the trailers released by WB:

I, for one, am pumped about this movie, and kinda saddened too. Harry Potter was a huge part of my childhood, and the only book that has ever made me tear up 👍. And from the previews, the battle scene looks to be really epic, and I can't wait to see what they do with it. Definitely my movie of the summer :D.

Haven't kept up with the books or the movies... Stopped reading after the 4th book and stopped watching after the 3rd movie. But I'm gonna be seeing Deathly Hallows Pt 2 with some classmates on Friday, so I'm making my way through the rest of the movies in preparation. Just got done watching Order of the Phoenix. Pretty epic. 👍

I'll probably go see it on Saturday with some friends. I've read all the books twice, and it was the series that really got me in to reading when I was a kid.

Didn't quite like Book 7... nowhere near as good in quality overall as Book 6... The ending was okay, but the entire middle of the book was a bloody, tense bore and the epilogue seems to have been written by a twelve-year old girl.

Seems they may have changed a number of things from the book in the movie... which would be an improvement.

This said... we will probably watch it... hoping it's better than the movie adaptation of Book 6, which suffered from horrible pacing and story-telling... so if they could turn a great book into a bad movie... one hopes that a bad book will, conversely, become a great movie.

(Disclaimer: I actually like some of the Potter movies. Especially enjoyed "Prisoner" and "Order of the Phoenix". I know... it's not high literature, but as kiddie books go, the books aren't half-bad...)

^

I agree with you there, the last book was meh in comparison. Harry, Ron, and Hermione went camping for 300 pages. As for the epilogue, it's horrendous. It's like a fanfic you'd read on the internet somewhere.

300 pages only? It felt like reading "War and Peace"... backwards. Which is why I didn't even bother to watch HP7:Pt.1.

As far as fanfics go, this one is even better. Starts picking up after a few chapters, starts getting funny at the Hogwarts school opening dinner, gets really hilarious at Azkaban, but kind bogs down around Chapter 50+... Someone ought to tell the author a single school year doesn't last all that long...

That's... tomorrow morning :dopey:

I've lost interest in Harry Potter after the 3rd when it always seemed the same, even if the later films aren't I still won't bother picking it up again...

At least mine isn't dumb :sly:

Nor is mine. I was well aware of that technicality when I made the post that I'm seeing Harry Potter tonight. ;)

Hell, even the movie theater's site has it under Thursday even though it's technically Friday. :)

Seeing this at midnight.

Being in high school when the books and movies started coming out, I had no reason to read them or see them. I was too old to be interested and too young to have kids. My girlfriend convinced me to see Half Blood Prince when it came out, so I watched the series at home with her to get caught up. We saw 7 pt 1 in theaters twice, and I ended up buying her all the books which I subsequently read for myself. I think its a good story and am looking forward to tonight.

Not really a fan of Harry Potter. When I was in High School my gf at the time dragged me to go see one of the movies, I forget which one. But it was the worst theater experience ever.

The A/C was broken, so it was HOT. They had large, industrial sized fans to cool the room and it was LOUD.

So it was hot, steamy, sweaty, loud, annoying, overall unpleasant.

So idk if I'm gonna watch it. I kinda want to do what some guys did when the last book was released, drive around and shout spoilers at the people waiting in line.

That sounds all well and good, but I don't think the spoilers are gonna upset too many people. I've never met anyone that actually cared about a book being made into a movie, without actually reading the book, hence they know what happens. That would have been pretty funny for Transformers or something like that though 👍.

Except who goes to see Transformers for the plot? :P

I couldn't think of another movie. I could have put any romantic comedy in there and it would have worked fine 👍.

Just got back, I was impressed, although the flim makers under estimated the audience's intelligence.

When he kissed the snitch (open at the close), and the stone came out, there was really no need for Harry to say "the resurrection stone!" Kinda cheapened the moment for me.

Just got back from seeing it. Pretty freakin' badass. :D

You guys are making the waiting really tough. :grumpy: I need to be back home soon to see this.

Going to see this tonight. Reviews I read so far are favourable in different degrees. No review says it's bad or average. One thing I learned from the reviews however ... I'm going to watch it in 2D.

Actually the 3d is ok in this movie. Usually the bad 3d movies I have to remove the glasses halfway through. Didn't have any significant eyestrain.

Excerpt taken from this - attention containing spoilers - review:

What did you think of the 3D?
The 3D was disappointing. A gimmick that brought nothing to the film, but which took a lot from it.

In 3D, elements in the foreground look out of proportion to elements in the background, and end up looking plain wrong.
Often, the main area of focus is clear enough, but the peripheral areas are blurry.
Overall, 3D is reminiscent of old black and white films where actors in a studio sit in a car and then a film reel is played on a screen behind them to simulate driving/movement. It looks fake and is distracting.
With the 3D specs on, the screen is much darker and harder to see.
Most of the 3D effects – elements on the screen coming closer to the audience – don’t work very well and their novelty soon wears off.
It would be much better to have high definition film, with better lighting, and crisp in-proportion images.

It wasnt too bad, I would have liked the final battle to have been closer to how it was portrayed in the book, but hey ho :)

I havent seen pt2 yet. Plan on taking my daughter this week.
I have a theory tho.
J.k. rowlings has stated many times that book 7 would be the last. This didnt really come about until say the fifth movie was in theatres.
I think now that the " final " movie is out we are going to start hearing rumors of something new soon.
Financially speaking. Letting the public believe that after this its over has to have a positive affect on ticket sales. If people new there was more to come ( wether it uses harry or just continues on with new characters either past or future stories) the hype surrounding this movie would be far less than it is now.
I have read the series twice now. Once for me a d the second time read aloud to my daughter. I hope i am right. There has to be a treasure trove of fantastic stories within the potter world.

Anyone read the tales of beadle bard?

Are you sure about that? I stopped reading the books after the 4th, and even way back then I knew there was to be 7.

That said, I certainly wouldn't mind more stories in the Harry Potter universe. 👍

I would love to read about Harry's childrens' adventures personally. And the movie was beyond fantastic in my opinion :).

Ok, seen it: The Half Blood Prince's Tale was better than I expected. The portrayal of the initial measures to protect the school was very well done also and these are, for me the highlights.

Missed a few things from the books but I can forgive all of them this time (unlike some unforgivable omissions in previous movies, these I can live with and even understand ...).

Won't say more because some may yet go to see the movie (and some of these never read the books therefore don't know what will and how will it happen).

Now the bads. Somehow ... and I'm feeling uneasy just to say this ... my only criticism is that the movie lacked two things that blew me away in (as an example) the LOTR movies. A proper nerve-wrecking build up to battle (Helm's Deep being my example) and ... SCALE (like we had in Helms Deep or Minas Tirith, just to cite two LOTR examples again). The battle for Hogwarts in the book has more scale and depth than it has in the movie and I don't understand that. Surely not a budget problem ...

In any case, overall I liked this movie very much, I'd give it a 8 out of 10.
