The horrific tom pryce crash on youtube? I strictly will not post the video unless it is 100% cleared by the mods,

a quote from 'teh pedia':
Pryce was directly behind Stuck's car along the main straight, Stuck himself sensed Van Vuuren and moved to the right to avoid both marshals, missing Bill by what Tremayne reports to have been a matter of "millimetres". From his position behind Stuck, Pryce could not see Van Vuuren and was unable to react as fast as Stuck. He struck the teenage marshal at approximately 170 mph. Van Vuuren was thrown into the air and landed yards in front of Zorzi and Bill.[39] The fire extinguisher smashed into Pryce's head, before striking the Shadow's roll hoop, which threw it over the adjacent grandstand. It came to earth in the car park to the rear of the stand, where it hit a parked car and jammed its door shut.[38]

The impact with the extinguisher had wrenched Pryce's helmet upward, and he had been partially decapitated by the strap. Death was almost certainly instantaneous. Pryce's Shadow DN8, now without a driver or a roll hoop, continued down the main straight towards the first corner, Crowthorne, coasting slowly. The Shadow left the track towards the right, scraping the metal barriers before veering back onto the track after hitting an entrance for emergency vehicles. The Shadow then hit Laffite's Ligier putting the latter out of the race. As for Van Vuuren, the injuries to his body were so severe that he was identified only by exclusion after the race director summoned all of the race marshals and Van Vuuren could not be found.[40]

Has anyone else seen this?

what are your views?

Yes, I have seen it, but I am missing to see the point of this thread. Is the way the accident happened in question?

I just wanted some users opinions on, the fact that the video can be vieed on youtube, the sheer unrealness of jansen's body. what was it like watching it live to the older users here?

etc.

I got real sick when I saw that video. When he got hit, his body wnet flying in the air and looked like it stretched another 4 feet because of his joints dislocating. What a horrible way to die. Pryce on the other hand, was just horrible luck. I've seen close up pictures of Pryce's head after the crash, it was horrible. Now Helmut Koenigg(sp?) had the worst luck, he hit the armco barriers at 10mph and got decapitated.....

I was sickened when I saw it too, especially when it was played the second time in slow motion. That was just equal parts macarbe and unneccessary. It would certainly have been a horrible way to die (but then, which way isn't?), but at least it would have been quick.

To the thread-starter, I seriously doubt you'll be allowed to post the video in question as it's quite disturbing.

You know the feeling that you get the moment you start that video? You think "It cant really be that bad", and as soon as you stop that sentence Jansen gets hit and all of a sudden your not as determined as you were before that. That was the worst accident I'v ever seen, the way Jansen gets torn up is absolutely sickening, and the aftermath photos of Tom's body lying on the stretcher made me sick.

It is a shame that Tom and Jansens death have both been immortalized as a sickening, grotesque spectacle to those who only view that video not for its place in F1 history. But for the fact that 2 men died that day. Terrible.

I didn't even get that far. I got a huge shock when Jansen was hit (I thought it would be like the 7-minute video that everyone has seen, the one without any fatalities (that I know of)), and wanted to throw up when the slow-motion replay was shown, zooming in on his body as it was pulverised. I knew there was more to it after that, but I turned it off.

It is 100% STRICTLY NOT cleared by the mods.

This thread already has enough information in it to enable a member to find the video should they choose.

i i cap'n 👍

Where is the video where it is close up? can you PM me the link? It makes me feel like a freak but It's really hard to understand exactly what happened as he was hit.

:indiff:

Oh wow, that sounds horrific just from the description - It's odd that I've never even heard about the crash before now. Perhaps if I ever get the urge to scare myself senseless I'll watch the video. :ill:

do it, but you must be prepared.

and spekaing of crashes, senna and ratzenberger 13 years this week, hence the avatar etc.

RIP

I think the guy that was hit was just torn apart from the sheer force. If he was lucky, he died the second he was hit. The driver in the car was hit by the mans fire extinguisher it seems, and that was a bit too much for the helmet.

That looks to be exactly what happened. The poor kid just gets shredded, it's like watching someone stretch play-doh. :scared: :ill: Damn that was a terrible crash.

I'm actually glad the crash happened at such high speeds - It's kind of comforting to think that neither of them would have had much time to feel anything.

Actually, the first time I saw this accident was on Speedvision they had a 1970's documentary about the dangers of formula 1 on called "The Quick and the Dead" the first scene was the pryce crash in closeup and in extreme slow motion making it even worse. Heres a wiki on the movie:
Wikipedia
"The Quick and the Dead, (orig. title: One by One, released in 1975) is a documentary about the deadliness of Grand Prix racing, including footage of fatal racing accidents. It is narrated by Stacy Keach."

Roger Williamson's death was also a very tough one to watch. The sad part was that he wasn't badly injured in the crash and was talking to David Purley when Purley was trying to push the car onto its wheels. It too was also in "The Quick and the Dead" Come to think of it, all of F1's fatalities throughout the 70's caught on tape were pretty much in this movie...

The 70s were about the worst time in F1 racing, safety-wise. Downforce allowed such high cornering speeds. Racing slicks were softer all the time. I read that Jim Clark used 4 sets of tires for his 1967 season with Lotus. Don't know if it's true, but I wouldn't discount it too readily. The tires weren't much sifferent from street rubber: they were treaded and everything. Soft slicks (they called them gumballs) added immensely to grip, and thus cornering.

The tracks were just not up to the speeds. It's one thing to have a long sweeper that a car runs through at about 95. It's another to have the car pressed into the ground by downforce and have the added grip of gumballs allowing the car to run through the same turn at over 140. In a car built not quite as well as a Honda Civic would be today.

So when a wing fails, or a tire blows, how much extra energy is in that vehicle? The speed may be 1.5 times higher, but the energy levels is immensely greater!

Then you have the problem of aluminum honeycomb construction. Strong and light compared to earlier tube-frame cars, but of absolutely no value in driver protection. Also significant is that of the 10 driver fatalities during the 70s, 4 involved fire, even if it wasn't fire that killed the drivers, and of course everyone has seen Niki Lauda's accident before Bergwerk at Nurburgring.

There were also problems with response times for accidents. I've seen as much as 8 minutes from accident to equipment on scene.

This is a problem still present in the sport. In general, response time to accidents is god-awful. When Ralf crashed at Indy (and broke his back) a couple years ago, there were no medical teams on the scene for several minutes. The field passed him by twice behind the safety car before medics arrived. In general, only a couple of corner marshals will attend to a crash. In other forms of racing, (most notably IRL, ChampCar, and ALMS) full medical and fire crews are on the scene in seconds, even if the crash is not severe. Many drivers have been saved in these series because of the instantaneous response. I guess F1 crews are too busy detailing those company-issued Mercedes.

Which is disgusting, it took 2 damn minutes for the first fire truck to arrive at Roger Williamson's crash, spectators were trying to jump over the fences to help David Purely rescue Williamson, but guards at the track with dogs wouldn't let them.....

Come to think of it, Ralf Schumacher's recent crash at Indianapolis had a 2 minute plus response time for rescue officials to arrive.

I've read that in several places too. I did have a fantastic article on GPL a while ago that covered the whole history of the 1967 season, including quotes from (I think) Lotus' cheif engineer at the time. Supposedly they only replaced Clark's brake pads every 2 or 3 races, same for his tyres. As for setting up the car, and I'll admit this is a very fuzzy from memory quote - "we just fitted longer gears for Monza, Spa and the Nurburgring, and told him to deal with everything else." It's not right, but that's basically what he says. Scary. :nervous:
