Have I killed my digital camera?

I left my digital camera outside and it got rained on.

I did a quick Google search and one site suggested to not try switching it on, removing the battery and memory card, dry it thoroughly, put it in a sealed box with some packets of silica gel, and leave it for a few days. That way it'll soak up all the moisture and you minimise the chancing of shorting something internal when you switch it on eventually.

How water resistant is the typical digital camera and are my odds of it working properly when I eventually turn it on good? It was a birthday present and I'd hate to think that I've killed it by doing something stupid like leaving it in the rain.

BTW, It's a Canon Digital IXUS 430.

Cell phones often survives a dip in a toilet bowl, so I think you at least have a chance. Good luck.

Yup, the one encouraging piece of news I got from someone was a workmate who said he dropped his phone in the bath and it worked fine.

I don't want to risk switching it on until I've made a thorough attempt to dry it out first though.

Rain water should not be too bad, as when it dries out very little residue should be left inside.

The silica gel and a good drying period is sound advice.

Water is not always fatal, stuff like Coke or Orange Juice is far worse as when it dries the sugary residue thats left causes major problems.

Fingers crossed and good luck.
