Having trouble installing the GT6 update?

I picked up gran turismo 6 a few weeks ago and was playing with the g27 wheel in offline mode for a while (capped my internet usage), anyway the new month finally rolled around and I downloaded all of the updates to 1.10 which took several hours in total. It finishes, I enter the game and now a screen pops up before the game saying 'installing Please go no switch off the system while the HDD access indicator is flashing.' cool, the updates says approx 250 mins. left so I leave it for a while and come back to see the screen say something like 'installation error'. I try once again to install, and about halfway trough, the same error occurs.

Any ideas on whats going on and how to fix it? I can't even play GT6 offline now because of this :(
 
Was going to suggest what I do and that is I don't do updates or even have the ps3 online at all but that's no use if you want to race online. I suggest you find a number for PD and ask the techno geeks sure they will have an answer.

Do you have enough free space on the hard drive because if you do not have enough free space on you hard drive you will get an installation error. And another thing you could try is to format your PS3 and reinstall all the updates and if you are do this remember to put your game saves on to a USB before you do the format.

I was about to format the ps3 hard drive until I came across a post on gtplanet with a similar problem. It was suggested to use an ethernet cable while downloading the updates and voila! Gt6 finally works.
