:ouch: So I got a copy of GT4 and was excited at the possibility to play in 1080i. I connected my RCA cable to my PS2 and turned it on. I switched to 1080i in the options menu then connected my component cable. Everything was great. Then when I backed out into the menu screen it was no longer feeding my TV a HD signal. I had to switch back to RCA. This is a pain in the butt. Is it me or is it in HD only in driving mode? I donrt want to sit there switching cables back and forth. My HD input only supports HD not a regular signal. Is there a menu option I'm overlooking? I'm in China and was only able to get the Chinese version of the game. The englisj one will be released here in a month. =(

Yea. IGN just confirmed that the game switches back to 480i in the menues. Also, the system doesnt remember your settings, so you have to change them everytime you start up. Kinda sucks, I kno. What kind of tv are you using that a 480i signal cant be fed through component inputs?!!?

also confermed a delay:

"Regardless, the game is but a few months away, again. This time, the date coincides, within a month, of the upcoming release of Forza Motorsport. Like it or not, these two games will be available within weeks of each other. Consider it a good or bad thing, we think it's a good thing. "

Sorry to bring bad news...but i knew they would put it against forza..

yeah right, forza is gonna get delayed a full year, mark my words.

Yeah I think the same thing Saint, I've been hearing how it feels very "unpolished and hard to control"

Some people have stated that the demo that came out has been around for 6 months and alot has changed, but thats completely up in the air right now

Make sure in your PS2's system config you have component turned on instead of regular composite. and keep the component cable in.

Lot of this going around. Lots of HDTVs failing to handle 480i on the component input (a perfectly valid format) for some reason. :(

Thats from IGN eh? I'm not really buying into it... Why? Because they've already released it in Japan. If they wait a few months for Forza to come out before they release it in the states, they'd have to do some minor adjustments to GT4 (2p garage battle, online multi, etc.) to save face, because we all know it doesn't take that long to translate...

Is there a way I can test my HDTV before I bother to get component cables for my PS2? I currently have a DVD player running component video straight to the TV in 480p.

I have to manually select the display mode (1080i, 480i, 480p, etc) on my TV but it does display a picture no matter what mode it's in. Though I have never tried giving it a 480i signal with it set to 1080i...

With my tv the component display does all the res formats like 480i but it's 720x480i and if the game goes back to the 480i I wont have any problems.
not trying to show off but as you can see on my manual

the component section does all the res formats and this is very legit for me 👍
I shouldn't have problems like switching cords and what not.

Most modern HDTVs should be able to handle 480i on their component inputs. That's why people with HDTV broadcasts over the air, on cable, or on satellite complain about their regular cable channels (non HDTV and non digital) looking like crap. This is due to the lower quality video on the non HD and non digital channels. And the bigger the TV, the more pronounced this issue is with non-progressive video from games, regular TV, and old DVD/VHS movies. I think your PS2 is getting confused with the swapping of your cables. As the other poster said, leave in the component cables and then see if all is well. I can't believe a TV manufacturer would specify only component or composite.

I would like to know if a normal LCD tv with composite video in and a maximum resolution of 1280x768 would be able to display GT4 in any higher resolution mode like 480p or 1080i, or it would be at the same resolution as a basic tv?

Thanks

Hey Oiboy,

Just wanted to let you know that if you are trying to play GT4 with the component video cables (red, blue, green) and you have an early Samsung HLN series (any size) your inputs will not be able to handle the switch from 480i to 1080i. The reason is that the early HLN series DLPs only support 480i on component video input #1. Input 1 is limited to 480i/480p, while inputs 2 &3 only support 480p/720p/1080i. This causes alot of havoc for gamers where the resolution changes alot. Retailers blasted Samsung for doing this and they updated the t.v. firmware halfway through the product cycle. You can check this by looking at the sticker that labels the inputs on the back of the t.v. I suffered with this problem for quite a while, until I swapped out my tv for the newer firmware version.

If you cannot do this, unfortunatley, you are stuck, unless you want to swap cables around between races/menus. Honestly, though, as long as you have component video cables, you are a mile ahead of the standard composite (yellow) video people in terms of quality, so don't loathe your tv because of it.

I hope this helps Oiboy! Good luck!
