When I switch my PS3 on it makes a horrible grinding noise, there is a disc in (GT6) is it the hard drive, also it is the original 60gb Fatboy, thanks for any help in advance,

I have this one in my PS3 currently, hasn't given me a single issue. If you want you can look for a 7200rpm drive, but I heard they add some more unwanted heat to your system.

A few basic guidelines(a "for dummies" post) for exchanging your HDD in either your PS3 or PS4 with insightful commentary.

1. All HDD exchanges on Sony Hardware will NOT invalidate your warranty. If you do try to replace the hard disk on the 360[Note: The internals], it will void your warranty because MS can claim that you used a non-licensed product. [They can and did do this in the past when Nyco introduced a solution to the RROD problem that could damage your console's cosmetics. If any evidence of such a device was used, your warranty was voided before service was even started on the product, if it happened at all. To this day, the Nyco fan remains an unlicensed product of the 360.]

2. All HDDs that are 2.5" wide, have a height below 9.5mm and is a SATA, regardless of space, is compatible with both the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. [Though the Playstation 4 supports SATA II drives]

3. If you are looking for a HDD that is at least a tetrabyte in space, you are in luck as more HDD makers are making smaller drives. If you are using English measurements, shop for a drive that is smaller than .374". That is around 9.5mm.

4. If you are worried about excess heat that a drive can give out, a drive with smaller RPM can be a double edged sword in the sense that it will get rid of heat in the Slim and Super Slim models, fair enough, but performance will suffer. [If you really worried about heat, consider solid state drives, which offers both performance and efficiency for about the same amount of money as bigger spinner-based(for lack of a better term) drives.]

5. Before you swap out your drive, first make a back up of your drive using a external drive that is bigger than the target Drive. [Example: If you are swapping out for a 750GB Drive on a PS3, use a 1TB External to back up your data.] You can't attach a External drive to a PS4 for back up purposes, and it is imperative that you install the latest update via Thumb drive once the new drive is in place. [The backup file will be condensed, or rather zipped up.]

6. Always swap out your drive according to Sony's instructions. You can find instructions at your region's Playstation site.

No problem. I have given the same lecture at least seven times within the last year and a half, so you're not the first and you won't be the last.

Thanks for the tips & advice much appreciated, I got the original 60gb Fatboy system, was looking to upgrade to a 500gb HDD,
500GB?

This is an overall good one: WD5000LPVT or WD5000LPVX (T=SATAII X=SATAIII, but get the cheaper one)
SSHD if you want: Seagate ST500LM000 (8GB NAND)

All these drives fit into the PS3 and also the PS4. Actually they do fit into 99% of any devices that use 2.5" SATA drives. They're all 7mm thick by the way.

EDIT: Sorry, the (Z)7K500 isn't the fastest one, only the 7k1000 (1TB) is. I removed it from the list.

Just FYI, the PS4 actually requires at least a 160gb drive. :)

See you learn something new every day. I knew that the OS on the PS3 and PS4 were radically different, but I didn't think that it would have necessitated a space minimum. Regardless though, it should be said that the PS4's base drive is 500GB, so downgrading to such an extent is sheer madness.

So I was looking through HDDs on Amazon. And if you just look up: Internal hard drive for PS3. The first one is a "Generic " one.
Generic HDD

I might get this this one. I don't want anything large or expensive since I'm probably just going to get a PS4 next year

Will any external hard drive work with the ps3 or am I going to have to put thought into it?

I got a new ps3 this week but the memory is a pathetic 12GB so I need a hard drive to go with it. Can I just go out and buy a 500GB HDD and then follow instructions from a Google search?

External HDD don't work, just because there is just a usb to the console. So you would have to have an actual HDD inside the PS3 to work,

However if you are going to transfer from old ps3 hdd to new ps3 hdd then an external would be useful. (You cannot run the ps3 through an external hdd)

Thanks, do I just refer to this post earlier in the thread then?

Or can I stick the one from my old ps3 in?
You can use the HDD of your old PS3, but the new PS3 won't accept the data and will reformat the drive. Simply means that you'll get an empty drive and lose all your data on it.

If you want to transfer data from your old system to your new one, then you first need to do a backup of your old system.

The drives I listed are all 500GB drives because that's what rizlaman was asking for.
It's not really worth to buy smaller ones though, because the prices for smaller drives are hardly ever under 40$ (often much higher), while 500GB drives cost about 50-60$.

I can live with a blank drive to be honest, the only games I'd say I'll be playing are Fifa 14 and Gran Turismo 6, neither of which I'm particularly far into.👍

Thanks for both of your help.

You can still backup your savegames with a small USB stick if you don't want do to the full backup.

Done the swap, pretty nasty that Sony didn't include the mounting bracket with the Super-Slim, but I just shoved a cut-up credit card down there, reformatting now, game-saves are on usb.👍

Still got to download GT6 updates though, will let them run through the night.

Can you identify for me your precise model number of your PS3 silm, @Akmuq? If the model number is CECH-4000A, then the model only supported a flash drive and a proprietary 250GB HDD to upgrade the system whereas CECH-4000B can support regular HDDs.
