Ok, so long story short...I have my HDD (40gig) from my old PS3 that has died. I am assuming the HDD still works since it would load up on the PS3 before crashing to the blinking redlight error. To which the problem lies...how can I recover pictures and items from the old PS3 HDD?

I have tried plugging it into another PS3 (a Phat 60gig) and it wanted to reformat it.

Suggestions? I am willing to spend a little coin to recover but nothing more then a few dollars...

You can't without getting the PS3 that it's originally from working again, as like you found out another PS3 will want to format it and a PC won't be able to read it.

Your only real solution is to work out some way to get it working temporarily to get the files off of it. There are some DIY methods of varying success, but it may just come down to paying someone to fix it for you.

Depends on the operating system running on the PC.

If it's some variant of Windows, I don't believe it's going to work.

I have no idea if this will work or not, but after hooking the drive up to the PC, try booting the machine from a linux live CD (many are available) and see if that works. Does anyone else know if this might work or not?

You can try a file recovery program that does a sector by sector read.

I use Get Data Back(you will need to pay to recover but can scan for free) to recover data from a failing drive, also look at the drives S.M.A.R.T values with HD Tune Pro(trialware).

That seems like it might work I haven't but I tried it. The Live CD is where the operating system is and the files are the PS3 harddrive.
