Alright, so about 2 months ago. I bought myself a Lenovo IdeaPad Y530.

Its a great laptop. I discovered I had an HDMI port on the side of it about a week after I got it.

And thought "Hm, I might want to utilize this at some point", but how? Thats where this tv thing comes into the equation. I'm not exactly sure if my tv has an HDMI port. But I know my tv has component cables on it. So my question is this. Is there a way to utilize the HDMI port on my computer and plug it into the tv without having to go buy a tv with the port on it as well? Or is there just some HDMI - Component cable I could buy? I've googled the heck out of this subject but I can't seem to find anything on it.

I found the opposite of what you need, but I don't see that they have one that would work for you - my guess is because HDMI needs to stay as a digital signal and it can't do that with a converter.

Regardless, your first step should be to see if your TV has an HDMI input. If it does, problem solved. And if you need a cable, monoprice has a ton of options at good prices.

I'm not exactly sure if my tv has an HDMI port.

Then go look at the back of it :p Is it an LCD or a CRT? If it's a (non-HD) LCD, you might as well negate the whole HDMI to component idea and use a bog standard monitor cable instead. Unless it's an HD, and you particularly want to show HD stuff on it, in which case it will (in most cases) have either an HDMI or a DVI port tucked somewhere round the back. If it's HDMI, great. If it's DVI, you just need to get an HDMI to DVI adaptor, which you'll find pretty easily :)

If you give me the model of the TV I can do a quick search and find out what sort of options you've got in terms of connections :) Or at least photo of it, which can be surprisingly helpful.

Picture I can do, backside? Theres a massive entertainment center in the way of the backside.

Here.

Excuse the poor quality. My computer's SD card reader is acting up and I had to take this with the webcam.

It's a Toshiba, the power button is that dark thing on the lower right. There is one front access for standard yellow white red jacks and an s-video port as well. If that makes a difference. That access is slightly to the left of the center of the tv.

From what I can tell, it appears that your TV is a Toshiba 27AF45. If that is correct, your best bet to be able to connect the laptop to the TV would be a VGA to composite adapter and either a male/male coupler or just an RCA cable (cable is more likely, I'd imagine).

I make no guarantees as to the quality of the image, but for around $5, it might be worth a go. Keep in mind that you'll still need another cable for sound - more than likely one like this.
