I plugged an HDMI cabel in and although the screen is a lot clearer, it seems narrower than with the regular AV cable supplied. I know it's not the tv because it's set how it should be in the wide format. I also noticed the ps3 said it was running in 1080i now. Is there an adjustment within the ps3 to make the screen right? I'm not very technical with these newer tvs and game systems.

There are some settings on the PS3 menu in the screen setting, and then video output.
There are also several effects, you can turn on or off there...

My tv's flickers if I run in 1080i, so i run it in 1080p. Do not know what the difference is, but it helps

Does it look like this below, and if it does just go to your Menu on your remote control and change you picture size to 16.9 so its a full screen.

No, the black bars on the sides are not there. The TV picture is full. It's kinda hard to explain. Like on that screen where we select our names to get started, my name is a bit shorter lengthwise. As it everything in the graphics. I.E. the cars seem compressed too. The text is smaller as well. I found the ps3 manual online so there are some things i will try. The images are a lot sharper just sort of compressed looking. I'll try and look up the manual for the TV as well. It is an Emerson and it says HD on it.

Could it be that the old image was stretched so now that it's normal you're just not used to it? I'm not 100% but I think with the analogue cable you were using before (from what I gather) you were only getting a 4:3 (or something that isn't 16:9, anyway) image so if you had that filling the screen it would've been stretched. I know that when I reset my PS3 so it defaults to 576p it looks horribly stretched, anyway.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I think I've figured it out. There are four different screen settings for the TV I'm using. And "expand" setting seems best. The image isn't stretched anymore however the left and right sides are just barely cut short. No black bars just the little clock icon next to the time on the xmd menu dissapears off the edge of the screen as does the u in the word menu in the upper right of the GT6 menu screens. Half of th u dissapears off the edge of the screen. I noticed if i select the HDMI cable i can't adjust the aspect ratio within the PS3 itself. I guess the HDMI knows what it is doing. So it could be the type of TV it is and although it seems like the left and right edges shouldn't be cut off a little, i may just have to live with it. I also noticed there are three different HDMI ports on the TV and i have it in the number 1 port. All in all its better, just not perfect. The tv is a 32" Emerson flat screen.

I think I have found your problem, go to options in GT6 and then stroll down to you see Display and then you will see Display Size on the top of the screen, press on Display Size and then you will see Set Display Size, press on that to the screen size you want.

Nice. Didn't know that existed. I'll have to try it in the morning. My one and a half year old won't let me do it right now. Lol!
Edit: yes it worked Hall! Now i just have to figure out why my headphones won't work. They have to be plugged into the red and white AV jacks...

If you are trying to get audio from the RCA cable on the PS3, then you should go to the settings (of the PS3) menu and somewhere in the audio options you have to select the one that says “both”. Meaning the audio will be coming out of both – HDMI and RCA (limited to stereo only BTW). Sorry but I don’t have PS3 here to tell you exactly the names of the options, but you will find it I’m sure.

Settings - Audio Settings - Multi-Output - On

*note - If you sorted out your overscan issues in the GT6 menu, it's only going to be sorted out in GT6. "Expand" will not be the right setting to use. I think @neema_t might have been on to it with the adjustment from what you were used to seeing. If you have a Pixar film handy, do the set up that comes on those discs. One stage will be for aspect ratio.

Ideally you'll end up on "just scan", "dot by dot", or something equvalent that gets rid of any distortion and overscan. "Full" or equivalent will be decent though if the others are not an option.

Yeah. The XMB menu is still cut short. It's a flat screen TV so I'm pretty sure it's 16:9. So the cars are actually "shorter" than what I'm used to? Lol! I did notice that when i had regar AV cables (red white and yellow) the setting i was used to was on 4:3. It being a 16:9 television elongated the screen then? Using HDMI the setting for acpect ratio isn't there. It seems odd but i really want the screen to be how it's supposed to be.

It is definitely possible to output 4:3 via hdmi, and I actually now suspect that's what you are doing. Go to Display Settings - HDMI - Automatic. You should then see it's highest resolution written on screen. Hopefully it's 1080p or at least 720p. If so, you then just need to sort out the tv settings as stated above.

If you have been using an horrendous stretched standard definition signal, you will be gobsmacked by the difference once you get it right. You may need to switch Multi-Output sound back on again. Not sure.
