HDMI to DVI help sound help.

Long story short, hooking my PS3 up to my PC monitor. I'm using a HDMI to DVI converter and I don't know how to get sound. My monitor has built in speakers, but will the hdmi/dvi converter lose the audio signal?

I have been told that HDMI carries audio, but DVI doesnt... so will I lose the audio signal in the conversion.

Or doesn anyone else have a decent way of hooking up the PS3 for sound through a pc?

My monitor has 1 tiny audio input jack for the record. It's the same size as the ones on the back of your PC's sound card.

*edit*And I realise my thread title is ****ed up.

You are correct - DVI does not carry audio so you'll either need to use the toslink (fiber) or the composite (red & white) audio cable.

So how do I hook this up then?

Do I use the hdmi/DVI converter AND leave the standerd composite cable in the back of the PS3 so that I can use the 2 audio plugs.

TB is correct.

Have both hooked up, and make sure under audio options in the PS3, that you have the analog (composite) output selected.

Yep. You're looking for a 1/8" stereo to RCA adapter.

What cable do you have coming out of your PS3? I'm assuming you have male RCA connections?

If so, here is the adapter you are looking for:

Oh, and is there going to be an issue with video quality because it is being converted? Will it look messed up on my 16:10 monitor?

Not sure. Quality should be good though. I've ran HDMI to a computer monitor (1920x1200) as well as HDMI->DVI to my LCD TV with good results.

Nope.. Definitely not. I'm running HDMI->DVI here - See if you can find something in your monitors menu called 1:1 Pixel Mapping ( or something similar) - You'll get black bars top and bottom, but will not get a distorted image..

I use a HDMI > DVI on a 24" LCD monitor and it looks great but your monitor has to be HDCP ready or you won't be able to play PS3 games on this monitor. As for the sound, you could get yourself a cheap 5.1 or 7.1 sound system from Logitech or creative using the digital output of the PS3.

@ Pako. You bad, bad super mod. You made 2 post in a row within 3 minutes without using the EDIT button. Tsj tsj tjs! :P

I have no idea what you're talking about, but I appreciate your concern. But lets stay on topic shall we? :sly:

I have seen some cases where HDMI provided a better picture than DVI with Side by Side comparisons. Could have been differences in monitors even though they were the same brand. The differences were minor enough that it really doesn't make a difference.

To stay on topic. Don't forget about HDCP!

As for the sound, you also need a decoder if you get a 5.1 or 7.1 sound system.

Ok, I got the video working but I cant get any sound.

I bought the analog to 1/8 jack but I cant figure out where to input it on my pc or what option to turn on on my PS3/pc.

I think it goes into the microphone jack (pink input?) on the PC and remember to change your audio settings on the PS3 to the red & white analog setting.

Oops. Yes, line in. Other than that, I'm not sure what you need to do.

Make sure the line in, isn't disabled in the OS. If you're using Windows XP, go to "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the Control Panel, click Advanced in the Device Volume section, then select "Options -> Properties" and make sure Line in is ticked under Playback. That's all I have to do to get Line-In working on my PC.

Like Pako said in #3, you have to change the audio options (settings) on your PS3.

I took some photos to help you. These are in Dutch but I guess that the symbols are the same in the English version.

Photo 1: choose audio settings.

Photo 2: menu after you've chosen audio settings

Photo 3: choose 3rd option and go to the next page

Photo 4: press X on your controller to confirm.

Thank you for the help guys. I finally got it going and all is well. 5.1 surround, 720p... I'm a happy man. :D
What resolution does your 24" display natively?.. My 24" is 1920x1200 -

A 24" running less than that would be quite a surprise....
