One of my really good mates got married recently and one of his gifts from his new in-laws is a 52" 1080p HDTV ( yes they are ridiculously rich people, not him, his in-laws ) His 360 is an older one that does not have HDMI outputs on it. I was over playing MW2 and finally I said, this tv looks like crap bru. He said on the HD channels it looks great, which it did. I had heard MW2 looked really good in HD so I flipped the input and seen it said 480p, looked on the back of his console and it was rca output. Well, theres the deal mate, thats why it doesn't look any better than my old tv:dunce: Is there anything he can do to take advantage of this huge sweet tv? I have seen "converters" for converting the non HD signal into HD but I just don't know how well that would work, analog to digital? Anyone had any experience with any of this?

Thanks

From my experience there is a slight difference between HDMI & RCA inputs. Did you make sure that the adapter going into the back of the console was set to HD? It may also be worth tinkering with the video settings to make sure that the correct display setting is set. I think the maximum the 360 can do is 720.

The 360 should have come with both a standard Composite and Component cable. I'm not sure if its the same in America, but I will assume it is.

Composite is the Yellow cable (coupled with Red and White for Left/Right Audio) which does a standard definition picture at best

Component has three seperate cables, Red/Blue/Green (coupled with another Red and White for Audio) which will allow it to output High Definition up to and including 1080p (provided the TV supports 1080p over Component)

So what should be plugged into the TV is the Red/Green/Blue/Red/White plugs and the TV set to the Component input. You should then be able to set the 360 to output in HD in the picture settings menu of the 360. If you don't have that cable (I think the Arcade pack didn't come with one in the early days) then you should be able to pick one up from a store easy enough.

Sweet, I had no idea there was a difference between composite and component inputs:dopey: He has the step up from the arcade one, he got his the first few months the 360 hit the streets. He doesn't have anything but composite but thats no big deal, he can get a component cord really cheap. So, component VS. HDMI, basically the same when it comes to the 360?

Even my 360 Elite came with just composite now.

If he doesn not have a huge audio setup then he should be fine, but component does not support the same audio quality as HDMI.

But as said, 1080p will only happen if the TV supports 1080p over component. Otherwise it will be 1080i.

I'm sure his tv supports 1080p over component, doesn't make that much of a difference though. He actually does have a super nice Bose surround system which he got with the tv as part of his wedding gift, lucky son of a.....but he really doesn't even care about the audio that much. He says he doesn't like playing with the Bose system too loud because it sounds like everyone is just right around the corner from him. In a private match I was running around and he said he could hear me and I was halfway across the map! Its like turtle beach headphones in his entire room. Thanks for the info people:tup:

If his system is simulating the composite audio surround sound that well he will get the same quality from component.

a lot of the newer better tvs can support 1080p through component cables, just need to make sure he uses the "Switch from tv to HDTV" (on the component cable that goes into the back of the xbox) and also be sure that in the Display settings (xbox360 dashboard all the way to the right) and set the Display settings at 1080p as well. When i first got my HDTV i didn't change the settings on the xbox360 so it didn't look that great, but once i set the xbox360 to output 1080p, DAMN what a difference. :)👍

I went and picked up a component cable for him tonight and carried it over, disconnected the standard rca's and replaced it with the component cable and soon as I set the 360 to 1080p, bam! What a difference, it actually took a little getting use to because he had been playing it on 480p on a 52' LCD so it really didn't look good. Now with it in full HD the lighting is so much better, actually have shadows and such now! Not to mention how much nicer the red tiger guns look, before they looked flat and after this set up all the colors really pop. I can't afford a nice HD tv so after tax season I'm picking up a 19' LCD pc monitor. I can get a decent one for 145.00 on new egg and it will double duty as my pc monitor and my 360's playing screen.

Remember, make sure it has HDMI or COMPONENT inputs and not just a DVI connection. :)

It does, hooked it up already. Also if a 2700 dollar tv doesn't have them then the world will be ending soon.

My $2,200 rear projection tv I bought about 4-5 years ago has no DVI or HDMI.
Yeah, anything for that price nowadays should surely have multiple HDMI connections.

I'm pretty sure TVs are much cheaper than that nowadays. I paid $2700 for my 52" JVC LCoS about 3.5 years ago (mid-2006). They've definitely gotten a lot cheaper since then. I believe you can get a 52" 1080p LCD in USA for about $1000-$1200 nowadays.
