HDTV- Pixelated and Random Lines

I have a DLP Toshiba 52" screen. It is HDTV ready, as it says it on the back of the tv by the inputs. The problem I am having is the font (when in the racing menus and screens, during 1080i) and images are pixelated. What I mean is the edges do not look smooth. Also I am getting small lines in the clouds while racing. The picture does not look nearly as good as others have posted.

I have the Mad Catz component set. They are hooked up to my inputs and I set the playstation2 to the component setting and ratio of 16:9. I put the game into 16:9 and 1080i.

The images and font look better with 480p, but the lines are still there. What else can I try? Anyone have a quick fix that I am overlooking? I searched but did not find a direct answer to this question.

Thanks alot!

Anyone have any advice? I really want to see the great picture!
Make sure that your TV is set to accept that 1080i input.
My XBR 36' has a setting that determines what the input is, progressive or interlaced. When I changed it to match the screen setting in GT4 the image was orders of magnitude better that when i had it set incorrectly. I hope this makes sense.

as i said before the graphics in gt4 arent as good as they hyped up to be. The resolution isn't true 1080i and i have the same problem with the lines. THe lines arent that easy to see but they are definitly visible for me. I dont think a better set of cables would help

Also it wouldnt hurt to pick up some better cables, Monster Component Cables are fantastic!

I still can't find out where you buy them in the uk! where can I pick up the one that directly plugs into the PS2 and provides a scart output.....

does anyone know?

I honestly can't really tell the difference between my $60 Monster Component cable and my $25 Sony cable.

Monster cables suck for their retail price ...

As for the Mad Catz component cables, I haven't used them ... But everything else I've used from Mad Catz (steering wheel, controllers, memory cards, S-Video cables, etc.) was pretty trashy ... I bought a 3-pack of Mad Catz memory cards for PS1 because they were on clearance for $5 and 2 of them have died in the 3-4 years I've had them. My brother has gone through several controllers on his XBOX, but they fortunately have a 5-year warranty ... If you can afford to spend a few thousand dollars on a TV, you should probably be able to afford better cables :P

Cables are cables in my opinion, except for the shielding you get with high dollar cables they are the same. I will get a picture of it tonight and show you guys, maybe I am just too picky.

Another way to explain what I am seeing is very grainy, if that helps.

You could try a different pair of cables ... If you have any stores that will refund products (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.), you could try a different pair of cables and, if you don't see an improvement, just take them back ...

Make sure you're in 1080i mode. Every single time you shut off or reset the PS2, it switches back to 480i. What you described sounds a lot like the analog flicker everybody has been experiencing.

Do You have model 52HM84 which is a DLP?
If U do the problem with those tv's is that they convert every format to 720p, so You might loose some quality in conversion(there is nothing You can do about that).
Also hd2+ chip which is that tv, has some artifact problems, hence Toshiba is already out with newer model(that can support 1080p).

I use to use the madcatz for S-Video, and they were absolute crap. The vibration from my sub would cause the video to flicker, and after a short while the cable simply wore out.
Even if it doesn’t completely fix your problem, I would purchase a better quality cable first before doing anything else. There’s a good chance you’ll get a better picture either way (Still might not be perfect if your TV is the main problem).
I myself am using the Sony component cables with my HDTV, and am very pleased with the quality.

(Kind of off topic) Has anyone used a DVI connection from a PS2? Does such a cable exist?

All currently available DLP televisions have a fixed resolution of 1280x720 (720p). It could be that your tv simply does a better job of scaling 480p than it does with 1080i. It could also be that GT4 simply doesn't look as good as it's been hyped. Sure it looks good, but there are plenty of flaws, particularly when it comes to aliasing.

DO NOT buy Monster Cables. Save your money and take your SO out to a nice dinner. Any decent set of component cables will do just fine. If you need to make a long run, then invest in better cables but cables are not end all be all that people make them out to be. Monster may be a better marketing company than either Bose or Microsoft.

I have seen the problems you describe with the fonts on my TV (Samsung DLP), but only at the start of races. It usually goes away but it has stuck around for an entire race. I don't know what the problem is, but it's the game, not the display.

I suggest that your DLP simply has trouble converting the 1080i signal into 720p. It's simply not designed to receive a signal in that format. If my 1080i TV receives a 720p signal, it won't even display a picture.

When in 1080i, the game is not running in a higher resolution, it's still 480. The 1080 is just a cleaner signal to increase sharpness and brighten colors.

Unless you have a huge unshielded transformer in the path of the cables - it won't make any difference (assuming your current cable's are not defective).
