Is it just me, or do a disproportionate number of helicopters seem to crash during military actions? What's the deal with that?

Having been up in a couple non-military helicopters, I have to say they are immensely complex machines, and susceptible to a lot of failures and weather conditions fixed-wing plains are not.

See, if something goes wrong in a plane, there's a chance the pilot can fight it and keep it stable, at least long enough to eject or bail. But when a helicopter goes wrong (except certain conditions) it instantly becomes about as aerodynamic as a brick, only it's a brick taped to the end of a yardstick and thrown by the other end.

High winds also are very very difficult to overcome in helicopters.

In a semi-unrelated story, I used to work near Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. One of the many things they do there is refit the Cobra attack helicopters. When they do a rebuild, the lead mechanic for the helicopter sits in the rear seat behind the pilot on the first flight. The pilot winds the turbine up as high as it will go, then dumps in the collective (the equivalent of droppping the clutch with the gas pedal floored). The thing leaps off the ground and zooms to 10,000 feet in a matter of a minute or so.

I guess they figure it keeps the mechanics on task during the rebuild...

I have never been inside a helicopter, but I have played a lot of PC Flight Simulation games (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 and Combat Flight Simulator, WII Europe Series). It is really hard to get the plane on balance in the air. You basically have to be checking the compas, to be aligned, the plane to be in the correct position, the correct speed according to the wind, and a lot of things. Of course the older planes, were even more complex to manipulate, you had to control the mixture manually.

Well...anyways, I tried then playing Longbow from Janes and I couldnt maintain myself on the Air. It is far more complex to pilot a helicopter. There are two things to control, the upper wing and the rotors on the tail. Basically what the upper wing does is control height while the one in the tail, makes you move from right to left. THen you have to tilt a little bit the thing to make it actually go.

Of course there is little to know from pc games, but at least you ge the idea of how hard is to control a helicopter. I remember watching the Vietnam movies, and seeing two pilots controlling the helicopter.

That was just incase the lead pilot was killed, then the co-pilot already had his hands on the controls.

UH-1 Huey's. Loud as all get out.

Helicopter's also have a problem with their "backwash". I forget what it's actually called, but when they get caught in their own backwash of air, they have problems with maintaining lift.

2 More helicopters crashed in the Gulf... 7 dead

"The British always start every war with a disaster" - My Dad.

How many ""Allied Forces"" have died in this war so far? How many were killed my Iraqi forces? The majority of deaths in a war are a result of their own people shooting them. Either that or the Poms suck. :p

It was a mid air collision between the 2 ...

7 Brits 1 American.

I work it out that 15 Brits and 6 US soldiers have died so far in 3 days of war

I don't know what you mean by this ..

1) are you saying that the British have a tendency to screw things up at the start of a war or somewhere there abouts?

2) Or is it that you mean that the British focus on such incidents?

If it's No 2..
Think of the familys and friends back home wondering if their loved ones are going to retun home
They should be informed ASAP about their losses ..

Beleive me i know what it's like i have 3 friends in the Gulf at the momment..
