Hey Everyone,

I am in the midst of upgrading from Playseat Trophy in front of a TV to a simlab rig with monitor attached.

I felt the trophy in front of a 100 inch TV would be best but after trying out a rig with a curved monitor attached, I felt it was way more immersive.

My question is that I wanted to get a 49 inch curved monitor but it looks like this won't work due to aspect ration (if that's the right terminology).

From an aesthetic perspective I really wanted a curved monitor and 49inch is the biggest I can fit.

Could someone please recommend what i should do?

  • smaller curved screen?
  • Adjust settings on the 49 inch?
  • give up on curved and get a flat?

thanks in advance for any help.

aspect ration (if that's the right terminology).
Aspect ratio is the proportion of screen width to screen height. The PS5 outputs a variety of 16:9 (for every 16 units of width there's 9 units of height) signals like 4K (3860 x 2160) and FullHD (1920 x 1080).

Curved screens tend to be wider, so will present at an aspect ratio of something like 32:9 (for every 32 units of width, there's 9 units of height). However, that doesn't mean they can only do that.

Check if the display can receive and show a 16:9 signal, and if it can it'll work just fine. You'll just have thick black bars either side of the centre, which makes it not ideal.

Also 43? Old man? You're borderline Millennial...

Thanks Famine,

Sounds like my dream of a curved screen isn't going to happen then without compromises.

The 55 inch odessy arc? is this a suitable option? it's 16:9

Also am I just being a tool and wanting the curved monitor because it looks cool or will it add some extra immersion?

For purely GT7 - do I need OLED or is QLED or UHD perfectly fine?

Yeah I think I just scrape into being a millennial but my poor back, shoulders and tech knowledge would align me more with the boomers!

I use a 32:9 49'' Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor on my sim rig with both PC and PS5 and GT7. It has 1440p vertical resolution, which now that the PS5 supports 1440p out works just fine, before I had to pick either 4k downscaled or 1080p upscaled, both supported. I am not sure how much testing they did with trying 1440p/120hz/VRR all at once but it does work. Of course the PS5 can only put out 16:9 so you get the image on the center of the screen. I still enjoy the curved aspect, of course it's not the same as PC where sims can utilize the full screen real estate and you really get the wraparound effect with the monitor mounted right behind the wheelbase.

I do hope one day Sony can decide to support ultra wide screen ratios, it would be amazing with this game. For now I switch between the screen and the VR2, both have pros and cons.

You are mixing terms there. OLED and QLED are terms that reference the display technology of the screen itself. UHD is a reference to the resolution of the screen (UHD = Ultra High Definition - 3840 x 2160).

Personally for GT7 I'd only consider 16:9 screens.

I used to quite enjoy GT7 and GT Sport from time to time when my rig had a 60" TV. But I then moved onto 32" triples so I haven't played GT since.

For GT7 my minimum requirements would be:
  • UHD/4k resolution (3840x2160) for the detailed cars and environments
  • 120HZ (how many frames per second the display could show, more fps = game looks more realistic/"faster")
  • VRR (Important for situations where the framerate drops and you don't want tearing where half of the screen shows the previous frame while the other half shows the new frame)
  • ALM reduces/disables video/picture processing and otehr stuff to reduce lag and latency (what did the ps5 calculate vs what is the display showing)
  • HDR for the stark contrast and more realistic colour representation (especially with specific brands that use specific colours :D)

After that the following factors can be used to sort out what to get:
  • size: big tvs are cheaper than same sized pc monitors, but pc monitors have "better" performance (lower latency, full bandwidth signals)
  • sound: many PC monitors have crappy or even no speakers while some newer TVs have multiple speakers and even a small subwoofer
  • rgb: some pc monitors come with annoying/distracting lights (imo) :D
