I need help. And as hearing how people say that realizing you have a problem makes you one step closer to solving it, I decided to post it here. Although, I am not sure if this is the right Forum. If it isn't I apologize.

As you can tell by the thread title, I need help. I have been smoking, probably 3 1/2 years now. I know its not really that long compared to others. In a way, I am glad it isn't (as long compared to others). I also thought that knowing I have a problem isn't enough as actions are more important, in my opinion.

First, I thought of searching around the 'net for some self-help sites. But I posted it here because I know that GTP is a community and it would feel more like friends telling me and helping me to quit as opposed to a site which I can't really relate to.

I guess I'm just asking all the other quitters how they did it. Tips and such. When I think about it, I don't even know why I smoke. It's stupid, I admit. So any help would be much, much appreciated.

Again I apologize if this is the wrong forum and if this subject matter has been done before. But if i revived an old thread, I'd be flamed, so either way...:)

Looking forward to some replies. Thank you for your time.

Im sure you can do it if my mom did it after like 15 plus years of smoking..she did it cold turkey too.

1. Throw away all of your cigarettes.
2. Produce flyers reading "Do not Give Pfffssshhh! cigarettes for any reason whatsoever"
3. Staple flyers EVERYWHERE including your forehead.

Having never smoked, I do not know the difficulty involved in quitting, but I gather that if boombexus can do it, you definitely can.

You could tell your friends and family to never allow you to touch a cigarette ever again.

My dad went cold turkey after 40 years of smoking. He didnt use patches of sprays or anything, so it is a matter of will power.

My brother stopped after a year (then moved to dope). He also went cold turkey.

Side effects in both cases were grumpyness and mood swings on the quitters part, but that is a whole lot better then tar filled lungs.

Basically stop smoking over night. No cutting down and fazing out of cigs, just stopping from one day to the next.

👍

If stapling signs to your forehead doesn't appeal to you, you could get T-shirts made up that say "Don't give/sell me cigarettes. I'm trying to quit."

Ah, now that's something. Thanks Mike.

Oh and Klos, I love number three. But can we make it like on the chest or stomach or something? So then the staple could have something to hold on to as opposed to just the bone on my forehead? Ouch.

i tried quitting smoking but then that was the only excuse to take a break at work, so i just eat candy instead. :)

Welbutrin or Zyban.

I smoked a pack a day of Marlboro Reds for 13 years and with the help of Welbutrin I quit. I'll have been smoke free for 8 months now.
Trust me, like Klos said, if it worked for me, it can work for you.
I had thought for certain that it wasn't going to work, but it has. Now don't get me wrong, there were definately some tough times that I had to be pretty stronged willed, but all in all, it was pretty easy as I look back on it.

Just go to your doctor and tell him/her you want an aid to quit smoking such as the ones I mentioned. Usually your health insurance will cover 100% of these costs because it's saving them from spending more money on your dying cancer ridden ass later on in life. :)

If you would like to talk about this some more, or if you have any other questions you would like to ask me, please don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Good luck.

I quit years ago by reducing my two pack a day habit down to a half a pack, then just quiting. I also imagined my heart and lungs exploding if I took anothyer hit from a cig, so brainwashing yourself helps, too.

To stay a nonsmoker you need to stay away from people that smoke. Just smelling secondhand smoke will drive you to smoke again.

My dad is an accountant and back when I was in... middle school or elementary school he had a heart attack and quit cold turkey along with my mom changing all of our habits for eating. I think about that time I stopped using condiments altogether except for Soy Sauce... well actually it's teryiaki sauce on my rice now.

Im 25 and been smoking since I was about 16/17, I figured that the time I had smoked was easily enough to get a smoking related disease so I decided to stop.

I chose a date (which was my birthday 30/12/03) about 4 months in advance and just stopped on that date. I kind of built myself up to stopping, I'd tell everyone that I was going to stop so I would have let myself down if I hadnt stopped.

I have dealt with smoking by just pretending it doesnt exist - I have a strange skill for just completely blocking things out altogether. So for me I say "smoking ? cigs ?" whats that ?

And thats how Ive done it - its only been about a month now but I think Im clear of cigs now.

Ane the obvious reasons that everyone goes on about, they are expensive and you stink when you smoke etc etc...........

Ok, I'll pick a date. How bout January 2005? Hehe, I'm kidding. :D Thanks for the replies.👍

Seriously though - get a calendar and choose a date to stop. That way you can smoke all you like until then, tell EVERYONE that you are stopping on "x" date and then after the date you arent

trying to stop smoking

or

quit smoking

you just

dont smoke !!!

Then try and imagine that you cant buy cigs, they dont exist, and what is smoking anyway !! Its worth a shot mate, and good luck.

Yeah. That's a good one though. In case you were wondering, I am surrounded by smokers. That's why it makes it somewhat hard. But I will do that. I don't wanna go to the doctor someday and find out my left lung is as small as a tomato or something. Thanks man.

Why do you want to stop?

Are you motivated enough is it no bigger deal. Are you not motivated enough you won't be able to stop no matter what medications you take. Sad but true.

sorry if Im being thick but

Well, does your wish to stop come from yourself or other ppl for example.

ahh do you mean that its more important for you to think about what other people think rather than stopping for yourself ?

If so then yes you are right you should only stop for yourself really but ... as a tool to help you stop if you brag about when you are going to stop smoking to everyone it makes it harder to start smoking cos you've told all these people that you are stopping. If you see what I mean

I think what GT means is, do you have the commitment to stop, or are you just stopping cos you think "Meh, I should stop"?

If you dont stop for the right reasons (the latter in this case), the likelihood is that you will start smoking again.

Thanks for translating Mike. Yes, that's pretty much what I mean. Smokers get picked on a lot and I think lot of ppl who try to stop do so because they believe other want them to do so. That is bound to failure.

My father smoked for 30 years, and he quit cold turkey a couple of years before my aunt died. 20 years after quitting, he died of lung and lymphatic cancer at age 69. A small spot that had been visible in his chest Xray for years suddenly came to life. It literally ate him up in less than five months.

Worth it? Not to me.
Reading that worked for at least one person:

On Monday I'll be 36... I quit that day! Or at least I'm gunna give it a damn good go!
As far as I know, slip2rock successfully quit. I'm glad to have helped him, because he has at least one kid. So think of that, as well - your future kids will thank you for not smoking as well.

Honestly, you'll be amazed at how much better you feel and how much better everything tastes. I never smoked much, and I quit long before my dad died, but even so the improvement in my life far outweighed the any difficulty in resisting. Good luck!

Yes it is my decision GTJugend. I want to stop. Not because what other people might/may not say. I have always been like that. Kind of selfish, I guess, but this time, I know I'm right. I am in no way saying that smoking is wrong though. Do what you guys want. I am stopping. Especially now after reading Neon's post. Man.

Well then I wish you the best of luck! Stay away from alcohol as much as possible the first weeks, it's easy to fall back whe you're UI.

Thanks, man.

Never been much of a drinker. Although I do have the ocassional beer when friends come by my house. I don't drink that much in clubs anyways.

See, I like this better than reading "Stop Smoking Now You Twisted Mother****er" in some site. Thanks guys.

Ok, nevermind. I'm rambling...

Good luck with it man. Hopefully I'll be able to convince my brother to drop the habit (my parents still don't know he smokes yet)
