Hello there fellow GTPers - it is time to buy a new car. First issue of course - is that I reside in lovely Cairo, Egypt. This does limit the options significantly. I narrowed down my options and shall list the price in Egyptian pounds; this only serves to showcase percentage price difference. Of course the cheaper, the better. I'm mainly looking for fun, reliability as the main metrics.

Let's dig in:

- Option 1: Seat Leon Advance (MK4) - this is the best cost effective solution at 1.47 Million. Only the Advance trim is available (No FR). This comes with 17 inch wheels, decent size screen, sunroof, rear camera and sensor. It's the least equipped out of all options. No 360 cameras, no decent speaker setup. Lovely VW engine and the 17 inch wheels are not very aggressive on the crap Egyptian roads.

- Option 2: Kia K4 - this has been newly introduced to our market with the middle trim coming in at 1.6 million. 190 BHP so in theory the fastest option in terms of acceleration. Looks are highly subjective which is annoying. The headlights are huge so will easily get hit. Inside - it's fantastic. Massive screens, decently equipped and it's larger so bigger boot. Cheaper to maintain as well. Never owned a KIA though. And the ride might also be aggressive. I am also not sure how fun it is to drive. Probably the least fun.

Option 3: Cupra Leon - This is the most expensive option at 1.77 million. It has ugly headlights but the rest of the car looks lovely. Very aggressive stance which is a concern as 18 inch wheels tend to get murdered on our wheels. Same 150 HP engine as the Leon. So probably even slower acceleration from the bigger tires but you get a brand that isn't getting killed off, bigger screen than the leon, Ambient light, a BEATs sound system, better seats.

There are some other options within the same price range like the Octavia A8 (bit boring I think), the new Golf (doesn't sell at all in Egypt so spare parts will be an issue) and some Chinese cars like the MG7 but I wouldn't do that yet.

Has anyone driven or ridden in any? Would love some opinions.

I think the standard Leon has torsion beam rear suspension so would rule that out. Does the Cupra Leon have multi-link rear suspension and adaptive dampers in your country? Middle trim for the Kia being the Gran Turismo which has multi-link rear suspension which should make a big difference in terms of ride quality over torsion beam. Both have reasonably long warranties so worth test driving if you can to see which one you prefer.

I think the Cupra also has multi link. Shall verify. The K4 is indeed the GT line. Booking a test drive for it.

You mentioned on your original post saying they have 18" wheels which I don't think gets the multi-link suspension, I think it comes with the 19" wheels. You might also have option to spec DCC instead. Also speakers seem to be branded Sennheiser, not Beats for the latest model year.

A cheaper alternative to the Leon is the i30 so might be worth test driving one of them if you can. All versions of that seem to have multi-link rear suspension.

You do seem to have different specced cars over there, see they are still selling new petrol Méganes. Personally, I would get a Renault Austral in that price range as it has same infotainment as the new Megane E-Tech which is far ahead of anything from the VW Group and Kia but car does come with a shorter warranty. I don't know if you can get the facelift in Egypt already to order, maybe you can get a good deal on the old model due to that. Here is a local blog post about that car:

If you don't like any of them after test driving them, you could always get a Nissan Sunny.

You're absolutely correct, mate. The Cupra doesn't have Multi link rears sadly.

I don't want to buy a crossover, though. Not my cup of tea.

So no option to get 19" rims?

Fair enough. Thought I'd mention it given how limited the options are as you are considering the Kia which is a longer car, it is kind of similar in weight too. There doesn't seem to be many options unless you consider Chinese cars and even then, there ain't many. I saw there is a car called Dongfeng E Pai 007 which looks actually quite decent and what a name, that manufacturer is almost copying a different car manufacturer in car design per model and doing a great job at it. Nissan released N7 based on that car so I think that would been a wise thing to release in the Egypt market given how popular Nissan cars are there. Another contender is the Changan UNI-V, it seems they copied Acura badge and Hyundai website. Both manufacturers seem to offer decent length warranties too.

Today, the Kia K4 hatchback got it's pricing announced in UK. They revealed it in Yellow colour so whenever I saw that, I keep on thinking of it as a Kärcher K 4. Anyway, you can be a star in a new reasonably priced car if you end up getting it.

A lot depends, I think, on what your priorities are?

For example: Would you rather have a smaller car at a higher spec, or a bigger car/brand at a lower spec.

Personally, I've always preferred having close to the highest specs I can get at a certain price point, which has sometimes meant looking at a smaller vehicle.

Without knowing what you place greatest value on, how can anyone know the best option?

The problem is there doesn't seem to be much options. Probably easiest thing to do that seems a lot of people do is just get a Golf. I think it had a recent facelift which might make multi-link rear suspension as standard but worth double-checking. Engine is efficient, car is quite lightweight so should handle well and given it is a popular car in the world, should be easy to get parts from somewhere if needed. Also, VW might start manufacturing cars in Egypt in the future so probably get more popular over there. Should have strong residuals too so potentially safest option to go for.

Maybe a mundane option but apparently in Denmark, it is sign that you are doing well in life if you have a car like that new. I was shocked to find out how expensive cars are over there ignorantly thinking it would be similar to UK and most European countries.
