Help me decide which $300 SDTV to buy, 30'' wide or 32'' normal

(My price budget is 300 and I'd rather have a bigger TV than a smaller HDTV)
If you sit closer it makes a smaller screen as big as a larger screen. Besides, I've seen new 32" 720p HD LCDs advertised for under $400. I'm sure you can get some great deals on used 720p TVs for under $300 as many people are upgrading to 1080p dislays.

If you are dead set on a CRT TV, I certainly wouldn't spend $300 on a new 30" 480i TV when you can get much larger HD ones used for the same amount of money or less. A friend of mine bought a used Sony WEGA XBR KV-40XBR800 40" 1080i CRT on Craig's List for only $100 in excellent condition from someone replacing it for a fixed pixel display. The KV-40XBR800 sold for $3,000 new just a few years ago.

There are some very good small LCDs for under $400 like D-N said. If you do go SDTV, make sure they have ATSC tuners for digital channels so you don't get screwed when the analog cutoff hits.

Actually you don't need a built-in ATSC Tuner. External ones work just as well, and have been around for a long time.

More importantly, this is only for people who still get their TV signals over the air.

And assuming they don't postpone the date yet again, the so-called "shut-off" isn't for another 15 months... plenty of time for OTA users with analog sets and no ATSC tuner to shop around for a converter box.

There are a lot of myths about the whole "analog cut-off", the worst one is that everyone with an analog TV that doesn't come with an ATSC Tuner built-in will be screwed and has to replace their TV.

That said, there are some legitimate reasons on why a "digital TV" might be a better choice, but no one should ever feel that this mandated "shut-off" will in some way turn their analog TVs into useless bricks. The media has in many ways turned this situation into the next "Y2K" fear fest, as they often seem to do to generate interest and thus viewers. The reality of the situation is far more dull then they would have us believe... just as it was with the whole year two thousand bug mania.
