Well, the thing she wants is a straightforward answer to the age-old question; "What is exsentialism?" I lied a little about the car, but she will be impressed if I can get a very clear answer. Anyone care to help me with this one (it will also satisfy my curiosity).

"Exsentialism"? Isn't that where something smart becomes stupid ("ex" meaning formerly; "sentia" meaning mind or intelligence).

I feel you mean "existentialism".

If you want to impress a girl, cunnilingus usually works.

*runs like a bastard*

Yes, you would be quite the cunning linguist with a word like that.

I have the feeling I've gone and ruined Jpec's thread right from the off...

Sorry... :D

Jpec, you don't live in Abalama, so don't follow Famine's advice too closely.

Unless you're into that thing.

Well, from what I've learned, existentialism is just the idea that you are simply existing, and you bring your own meaning to life, and that there isn't a universal meaning/truth to life.

That's what I learned in Plilosophy. Damn, that class was fun. I believe that Hume was an existentialist, was he not?

I dunno, never heard of 'im. I just learned about existentialism last week in history. :)

Existentialism is a philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one's acts.

This philosophy originated in the 20th century, as a movement, assuming that people are entirely free and thus responsible for what they make of themselves.

Enjoy your car.

Man, you may have messed up. She might want you to quote philosophers on the subject. It woud have been less complex to do a laborous task for a few weeks.

Jpec07, what's the meaning of life?

...is actually what your sister asked you.

http://www.tameri.com/csw/exist/

existentialism - (You skipped the introduction, didn’t you? Scroll back and read this page completely.) The doctrine that among sentient beings, especially humanity, existence takes precedence over essence and holding that man is totally free and responsible for his acts. This responsibility is the source of dread and anguish that encompass mankind.

An existential system is impossible. An existential system cannot be formulated. Does this mean that no such system exists? By no means; nor is this implied in our assertion. Reality itself is a system — for God; but it cannot be a system for any existing spirit. System and finality correspond to one another, but existence is precisely the opposite of finality. — Kierkegaard, Concluding Unscientific Postscript

Say you agree with this.

"You agree with this."

Do I win?

No, you obnoxious literalist. But nice try.

Alright. Here's my own answer based on reading two or three paragraphs (good enough for me). Be amazed at how well I grasp concepts like these. Existentialism is the philosophy of how one's perceptions shapes the world around him and how he perceives the world, and how this relativism belies the notion of an organised structure to the universe and purpose for one's existence.

Cunnilingus would have been easier.

:D

Are you sure you don't want to cry, complain, then report him and everyone else he associates with to the moderators like usual?
