Help me with my Engineering Design project!

I'm designing an automatic cord winder for my engineering design final, but I'm having issues finding a motor from a catalogue. I was hoping you guys could aid my search. This will run on 1.5V batteries or a 9V battery. It needs to have a rotating axle. Torque and RPM doesn't matter too much, thats not really the point of the project. The best I can find is one of these. However, then I would need a transformer to up the voltage from 1.5/9V to 12VDC.

Could you guys help me by either A) giving me a better idea to go about this than how I have it, or B) Helping me find a 1.5/9VDC rotational motor.

EDIT: It has to be small, too. Make size of 55mm diameter
 
Have you looked at Tamiya gearbox kits, they are good for use with 3-6V and are only about 30mm in diameter. I have used them on RC robots and they work great. You might be able to find them at a local hobby shop for around $10. It could be slightly expensive since you only need the motor, right?
There are also Solarbotics gearboxes out there, about the same motor size and same voltage, around $5.

EDIT: Ok, I remembered where I found motors before. Pitsco has a 280-size motor about the size of a quarter that runs off 1.5-3V. http://catalog.pitsco.com/store/detail.aspx?CategoryID=8&ID=2997
 
Get a freakin Novak 540-size brushless motor kit and some good SMC batteries.:sly:

What exactly is it that you're "engineering"? You can't do much with a motor only a couple of inches long. How much torque would a motor that small have, a couple lb-ft? But I guess electric drills are that small, and they can have enough torque to mangle your hand if you're dumb enough not to let go. But you tell me, you're the engineer. Oh, and what is this "mm" you speak of? If you engineers work in metric, then why the hell do I measure in decimal inches on my drawings? It's just high school drafting, but still. My dad is a machinist, and he usually does the whole inches thing, too.
 
This makes me glad that our senior design project is no-assembly-required :lol:
 
Go to walmart and buy a 2 dollar portable CD-Player.

Go outside, and smash the player into the floor. Remove the little motor that spins the CD. They have little torque, though. How much torque do you need for cordwinding, anyway?
 
This isn't a senior design project, and we don't have to build it. I just need to find a real motor out of a real catalogue so I can reference it, unless I want to design a custom motor...
 
Hmmmm...design a custom motor. Well, you're the engineer, get to it! Get some electrical buddies, maybe some physics guys, a person or two to draw it, then you're set.
 
Does it have to be a motor? Because there is a much more energy efficient way of making an automatic winder.
 
Like fatman_5050 suggested, an easy bet would be a motor, gearset and battery from a radio controlled car - Tamiya are a big player in this market and produce an excellent yearly catalogue with plenty of technical specs in it. I know they do a 9V battery & motor.

Its probably not the cheapest solution but since your project is theoretical anyway it doesn't really matter.

You can't step DC volatge up, and you can't step it down with a transformer. You need a digital circuit.

If your electrical or computer engineering, you will find the 7805, 7809, and 7812 regulator chips very useful ;)
