Help My Dad Choose a New Car!

Just wanted to drop in and clarify that I must disagree strongly about the comments regarding the MINI Cooper and the auto tranny.

That MINI auto tranny is one of the most fun auto trannies I've ever driven. BMW's M3 SMG is much better, as is Audi's CVT, and Lexus has a good thing going with their sport/auto tranny as well, but the MINI is a ton of fun with the auto, if you know how to milk it for what it's worth.

What kind of space does your dad need? If he isn't regularly hauling around more than one other person, there's no reason he couldn't get the MINI.

They're now offering the Cooper S in an auto configuration as well, if he wanted a little extra zip.

Personally, I'd go for the MINI, unless he regularly needs room for more than one adult passenger. Otherwise, that car has plenty of room for just about anything short of a construction contractor run, once you fold down the seats. I've seen such things as 150lb great danes and full-sized push lawn mowers fit in them without a problem. A third passenger, however, will not be comfortable for more than a very short ride.

Give me spec on that Jetta and I'll let you know. I don't trust Jetta sedans on reliability - their VINs start with 3.

:ouch: Mexican cars are THAT bad when it comes to reliability? :scared:

Tell him to get a Lincoln Mark VIII LSC! It's faster, has an automatic, it's more reliable, and the styling is great! Perfect! :sly: 19-25 mpg mixed city/highway driving!

Agreed. We've had more than our fair share of issues with Jettas. All VWs, for that matter. They're good for a few years, but not much past that.

There are a few models still made over in Wolfsburg, and they tend to hold up a lil' better.

Those window actuators though. DAMN those window actuators.

:)

The only Jettas built in Germany are wagons. I love Jettas but their reliability is piss-poor. No worries with Passats, but their V6 is horrible. Can't wait for the next Passat.
