Yesterday I reformatted my PC, today I started installing the drivers and was having troublewith the sound drivers. So I'm looking all over for a sound driver that will work, so a frustrated me, still no luck switches off the PC and goes away for an hour. When I come back I switch on the PC and no picture comes up, I check the cables, no picture. I unplug the monitor from the PC and I get the no signal sign, so I plug it back in and the no signal sign dissapears, but still no picture. I grab my other PC (which is crap but has for the first time since 1998 come in handy) and plug the monitor into that and it works. Unfortunately with my crap PC being a DELL, and a crap one at that it's built different, it has an onboard graphics card so I can't see if that one works and it has no slot for another graphics card so I can't try the one I think has just broke.

So, heres my problem, I'm using a crap PC that works but with a good PC lying dormant next to me, does it sound like the graphics card has just popped it's clogs or could there be something I'm missing?

It sounds like a POST (Power-On Self Test) failure. Did the PC beep at all at startup? If so, the pattern of beeps will lead you to the problem (you'll need the motherboard's manual or web site to hand).

Theres no beeps, you can hear everything start up normal but with no picture.

Nothings changed on the PC, it's the same as it was yesterday. The same as it's been for a year. It worked after I re-formated it, and then just earlier today I switched it on and no picture.

Double check all of your cables, RAM, AGP and PCI slots. Then triple check them. Somethings not getting power if your nto getting any beeps. And make sure your system speakers are hooked up, did you get a beep before when you turned on your computer?

Is your sound card a PCI card?

The sound is VIA, built into the board, I've never noticed any beeps switching the PC on but it might have done just one, there none now. Just nothing I've looked out for in the past. The cables are all hooked up correct. The way I see it theres still power getting to the monitor because it says theres no signal ONLY when you unplug it. As for the speakers they're plugged in but I couldn' get the sound drivers working and then when I came back to try again there the picture didn't show up.

I've been to a mates and borrowed a different graphics card and I'm back on my good PC, so it's the card that doesn't work. I still need to find the audio drivers that I had before, and tomorrow or Sat I'm going to pop out and buy a new graphics card.

i had this exact problem not too long ago. turned out some dust was in the AGP slot. i took it out, gave it a clean, put it back in and presto. it worked. no idea why.

Hmm, the acient card I have in now plugs into the standard extension slots or whatever you call them (the same as an internal modem, a sound card ect), not the AGP, I'll wait and see it the card works in my mates PC, I left it at his he should be trying it later, if it does I guess I'll be cleaning the inside of my PC.

oh you mean its a PCI card? that MIGHT be why its working :) edit: or do you mean that godawful aincent (i cant spell) ISA?

anyhow, a little dust can throw alot of things out of order. silly dust.

Well it was dusty inside, I'm checking if my Geforce works at my mates soon, if it does then I'm happy since I won't have to bu a new card. Yes, silly dust, doesn't have a clue what trouble it's causing, if that is the problem. I should know soon.
