Hi guys,

I have a friend that is looking for a small, little hatchback. I have found a 2001 Toyota Corolla on Trademe (New Zealand equivalent of Ebay) for $8,500 NZD. It has just been imported. It has 90,050km on the clock. It has a chain drive engine.

Has anyone had any experience with this gen Toyota Corolla? Is it very reliable?

Thanks,

SVX.

Here's a link to the listing.

The automatic trans is cause for worry (Japanese automatics don't exactly have the best reputation) but otherwise the car should be proper Toyota reliable... Just, expensive to fix when stuff does go wrong by that same token.

That's a decent motor. Gives just enough low-end grunt to get you around in traffic, though it's a bit thrashy when you're trying to pass on the highway (plus the 4-speed auto...? prepare to grit your teeth...)

Fuel economy is good.

Won't be the most exciting thing on four wheels, but it'll do.

Only problem, I guess, is the mileage... check that the oil looks good (these engines can suffer from the long oil-change intervals if they were driven in traffic) and that the transmission doesn't shift like dog.

some of us never had anything past a 4 auto (which sounds perfectly normal for the age of the car, btw).

Niky's got a point about the fluids. that's generally the easiest thing to check and fix, anyway.

That isn't mileage for a Corolla :p Well, we got the 1ZZ-FE here, and it seems to be rock solid.

The only thing I'd be nervous about is that auto though, since they tend to shift like crud.

Thanks for all of the help, and things to look out for, guys! So the tranny isn't that good at shifting, is there any mod to help fix that?

a flush and filter change, like it was engine oil. I'm up to my 50k km purge in a few hundred (Chrysler trannies have a rep, too). had that with an old ford 3 auto, too. had a bit of a porous case (don't ask what kind, the car's long since crushed)

anybody else got some tranny tweak tips?
