I'm a 15 yr old kid fom Utah and I wanted to be a race car driver for my whole life the problem with that is I kinda need a car. I don't really know about cars but my dad does. He is possibly the best mechanic in Utah but he does not help me on the subject. I'm really into the Nissan 240sx and the older volkswagon golfs but I come from a poor family. I just want some advice on what car I should get and how to start being a race car driver. Any help is appreciated.
 
Not to kill the dream but becoming a race car driver cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. What type of racing do you want to do? First you need a regular license and learn to drive normally just to get used to how to drive. After that look for race tracks and event races near you and see what the regulations are. Whatever car you get will have to meet them and they should let you enter. You may need a racing license I'm not sure. For the most part it's gonna cost you a ton of money. Engines and parts are so much money and gas to run it etc. Talk to your dad more and see how cars work a bit more.

Pretty much start with small races locally and hopefully win those than look for sponsorships from companies because you will never be able to afford the cost of it all.
 
Getting a 240SX or Golf won't help you become a racing driver. Unless you plan on constantly putting your car on a track, just having these cars in every day driving won't do anything. The number one place racing drivers start is in karting. But again, even that is quite an investment. Perhaps you are in over your head.
 
If you're looking for a car I suggest a Miata. They're small and relatively cheap depending on the condition. And as for customizing it, (don't get too out of hand such as massive spoilers and body kits etc.) I recommend sticking around your father when he's working just so you can pick up a few tricks of the trade and if you do you can eventually apply the to your car in the longrun.

Karting is where most drivers start, but you are looking at a massive outlay. Even if you can afford to fund yourself, to get anywhere (like getting noticed for a Formula drive) you have to be good. Like, REAL good. By that time you will have had to of funded yourself for at least a full season and placed highly. There are thousands of young guys whose parents have been able to fund their potential careers and get them karting from as early as 6 years old all competing to get drives in higher levels of motorsport.

It is a great sport, my favourite actually, but not very accessable without a bit of financial backing, unfortunately. Buying a cheap car to compete in grass roots events isn't going to get you noticed enough to forge a career.

Its a sad reality, but thats not to say you can't have fun in the sport still. Aformentioned grass roots events are fun, and if you have some more cash you could build a dedicated race car and race with some local clubs. Just don't expect a career out of it.
 
Nobody starts their pro race car driver career driving a car. Or having a driver's license, for that matter.
