can i use an ordinary flash drive to transfer data from my memory card?

Photos - yes
Replays - no

As long as it's compatible, you can save photos directly on to it. (The photos will end up in a GT4 folder on the USB drive.)

as daan said--make sure your USB flash-drive is compatible by checking some threads posted in the Photo Mode section... i went the easy route and picked up a 256mb Sony Micro Vault that works flawlessly without having to do anything but plug the stick into the front of the PS2 with GT4 on, snap-n-save my photos, and open the stick on my PC to do whatever i want with the pics... it's quite addictive, and i'm sure you've seen GTP's members post up some great photos for competitions... :dopey:

quick note: your photos may appear darker on your PC than they do on your TV--this is mentioned in some posts--either adjust the exposure in Photo Mode to lighten the photo before you save it to your USB flash-drive, or mess with it in Photoshop... if you plan on entering photo competitions, you may want to learn to mess with the in-game features before saving a pic, as Photoshop and other art/photo programs aren't always allowed for you to adjust the brightness/contrast/saturation/focus/blur of your photos...

last note: in Home/Options, go to Photo Mode/Photo Lab, and check to be sure that the USB flash drive images option is set to Super Fine for the best detail and largest image size (1280x960 pixels)... when you snap a photo you like with X, you get taken to a larger shot of your image with a Save Photo window coming up after pressing Start... make sure the Desination is USB Storage Device before selecting OK...

i'm looking forward to seeing what kind of pics you take--some of mine are at the link below in my signature... happy pic-taking... 👍

daan beat me to this new no person that doesn't search.

next use this it will help you more then a single daan can

i went all over the place looking for these things... ebgames had no clue what i was talking about (well they sorta did, but they said they didn't carry any) and a couple other places too.

what should i ask for when i go into an electronic or gaming store? and which ones allows you to transfer replays?

i just bought a 512mb Memorex travel drive... any idea about how many pics can fit on it? i have about 25 so far on it and i just wanted to know approximately how much more i can fit on it before i have to start deleting them for space

one just like this... but it's a 512mb

It depends on the amount of details in the picture but I'd say about one thousand.

yep, easily about 1,000 photos as mentioned... or even up to TWICE that... my pics are usually in the area of 250kb or less... a little math says 1,000kb = 1mb, or around 4 of my pics per mb... since you have 512mb for your new USB flash-drive, conservatively, you can store upwards of 2,000+ GT4 photos... get snappin! :dopey:

something kinda off topic... but how do you guys take pictures of the car while backfiring? do you just hit 'select' and hope to catch it? because that's whta i've been doing and it's very time consuming :ouch:

yes, the Select button has to be timed to catch the backfire--it's quite a chore... if i want to capture backfire in a photo, i save the replay i want to take photos of, watch the replay in the Replay Theater once through to check on timing, and then hold my Dualshock2 in one hand with my thumb at the ready to hammer down on the Select button at ju-u-ust the right moment...

it can sometimes take several attempts to capture the biggest, brightest backfire--especially if your car sports a dual-exhaust, like an S2000 or NSX... cars with a single-exhaust are so much easier to photograph, like one of the thousand Skylines or hundred Civics... i also look to make sure that the backfire is captured at the brightest point, which also happens to reflect off the ground... 👍
