I saw a car commercial today that made me think to myself "wow, what's next?". It was an Infinity commercial that was showing how they now have a crash avoidance system that can sense and react to an impending collision two cars ahead of you. Crash avoidance technology is relatively new, first appearing in 2008/2009 Volvos and Mercedes. It has also come a long way since then and is now proving to be such a huge improvement in vehicle safety that the NTSB (national transportation safety board) in the U.S. wants to federally mandate these systems. Meaning that in the next few years, a federal law might be in place that requires crash avoidance systems to be standard equipment on every car sold in the U.S. (much like seatbelts and airbags).
As someone who works on cars at a professional level, technology that appears in today's cars is fascinating to me. I thought I'd start this thread to get other peoples thoughts and opinions on today's hi-tech cars. I searched for any existing threads on this subject and all I found was an old thread from 2005, so time for a new one.
So... my intent is for this to be a general discussion on car technology. A few examples of things to talk about would be:
What technologies do you think are cool or interesting? Crash avoidance, lane departure warning, sleeply driver alert systems etc...
Do you have a question about how something works in today's cars? Ask here! I'm sure I'm not the only one in gtplanet with training in advanced automotive systems, so I'm sure either myself or somebody else can tell you how something works
What technology do you want to see in the future? What are the possibilities?
I INVITE ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING RELATING TO TECHNOLOGY IN TODAYS CARS. WHATS ON EVERYBODYS MIND?
I have a question to start with. About crash avoidance systems... I know they utilize either radar or lidar (depending on system/manufacturer) to detect vehicles ahead of you and rate of closure. As we all know, cops use radar and lidar (commonly known as laser) to give us speeding tickets. Radar "jammers" are against federal law in the U.S. My question is with cars now using radar for crash avoidance, cars will theoretically be acting much the same as radar "jammers" (for those that don't know, jammers send a radar signal out from you car and that confuses the cops radar gun, making it give false readings). How much will this throw off the cops? Will they need to find a new way to catch speeders? Anybody know?
