I request that Sony put in the HIGH POLY cars in Photomode. :yuck:

The ones that are in your garage are the highest, the photomode cars are next followed by the race versions.

If you look close at the garage cars, you will see a BIG difference in the basics ... like actual ROUND wheels for example.

Ok, rant over ... as an ACTUAL photographer I just needed to vent!

See ya!

Well blame the PS2 and its ****ty hardware.

Your right the race versions look like ass well the rims do anyway the cars are pretty still but its Photomode that makes them look the best I think mainly because of the backgrounds and reflections etc. I honestly don't think the garage models look any different to the photomode ones but its hard to tell really.

garage cars are not better then fotomode travel cars. THey are the same.
Normal race fotomode cars are equal as in game race cars, for me.

Garage cars share the same models of Photo Travel cars. Photomode have the same models we see during races. If I remember correctly every GT game had two models for each car, a more detailed one and a less detailed one to use when driving.

I have looked at both (garage and photo travel/photomode) VERY closely, and there really is a difference. Especially in the fine details. I also have my PS2 connected via S-VIDEO so that may make a difference in the amount of detail you can see on your TV.

For example: on the SUZUKI GSX-R/4 Concept, in the garage you can clearly see all the details in the brake calipers (they are the're own part) and the vents in the brake rotors (the little holes in the rotor) are there too. So, I took the car in to photo travel/photomode and the calipers were "painted on" the rotor and the rotor vents were completely gone.

I feel that the reasoning behind this lack of details is because: in photo travel/photomode you have to render the car, the sky box, the buildings, the people (if there are any) as well as all the background - mountains, roads, signs, trees, guard rails, etc. In the garage you only have a car and some lighting - no more.

Also let's say that the old PS2 HW has issues (like render time) on anything above a certain poly count. Out in the "world", with all the surroundings, the poly count, as well as textures can get pretty high. Now take it in the garage and all you have to view is the car - none of the other stuff. The designers probably figured that most players would like to press the shutter and see a pic in a couple of seconds as opposed to waiting 20, 30 seconds or more for the HW to render a high-poly scene, so they opted for the quick route as opposed to the quality (time intensive) one.

I guess I just wish that they let me control which car to use. Like having a photo travel/ProPhotomode where the render time takes a while but the results are much better because they use the highest poly models.

I'm all about the quality - even in my "fake" photographs! :sly:

Upgrade to component cables and get a HDTV. They all look great that way.
S-video only passes 480i (at the most) You'll need component for 480p or 1080i
and a TV/Monitor/Projector that can display them.

Kind of extreme for taking fake pictures of fake cars, don't you think!? :sly:

The mention of S-VIDEO was in reference to the fact that I think a lot of gamers are NOT using it, therefore the image they see will be of less quality. I have both - a PS2 on a STANDARD cable and one on S-VIDEO and the S-VIDEO is MUCH clearer then standard.

As for the HDTV option, I can not see how that will change the models poly count, only the amount of resolution that you can see when viewing them. What you will see will indeed be cleaner, but not "different" :)

As soon as I am able, I will post some pix of the difference between garage and Photo Travel mode.

man, me and some mates played gt4 on a projector, that was sick, we used the college projectors :D too bad i didnt take it into photomode, otherwise we could have seen if theres any difference in detail :o

Now what Photomode are we talking about here?

I assume everyone knows there are 2 types of Photomodes.

Photo Travel and Photo Drive. Travel looks good with 3d wheels, and Drive is much worse.

I think that the ones in the garage are pretty equivalent to Travel, quality wise.

I think the use of blur during photo drive pix is important or else you rims will look ugly. Of course in phototravel you don't have to worry about that cause the rims will always look good.

OK, here is the proof

I apologize for the quality of the garage shot, but I do not have an HDTV or LCD projector as was pointed out earlier. ;)

I found a way that you can REALLY see the difference.

• Go to the garage and select the Viper concept car - if you have it. Look closely at the brakes. You can see the rotor holes REALLY clearly.
• Now get in.
• Go like you are going to change the wheels.
• Select something in a SMALL or THREE spoke. You can REALLY see the brake rotor holes there as well.
• Purchase them if you want.
• Now take it in to photo travel mode and zoom in to the wheel as far as possible. 300mm
Guess what ... RIGHT! No rotor holes and no 3D brakes.

There you go. Proof that the models are NOT the same ... unfortunately. :(

And, like I said in a previous post: If all the detail was in the car, it would take forever for the PS2 HW to render the rest of the scene. Like all the stuff in the pic below.

PS: Sorry for spelling BRAKE wrong on the pic ... I was in a hurry. ;)
