High Speed Internet Under $45 a month? I need some help finding one

Hey guys
Current I am paying around 45+ dollars for Verizon DSL, Damn expensive and its around
1.5 meg Download
0.13 upload..
It just sucks big time.. especially uploads.


I live in Philadelphia PA area USA, just to be clear.

I want to get FIOS for $45 bucks I would get 10 down and 2 upload.. but it's not available, also I ask them myself when? All they said is they do not know.. SO that could take a YEAR or so for them to get here..

Comcast.. seems pricey, and I don't have cable or Phone services by them, so I would have to pay 10 dollars monthly extra I think. So it would be around 52 for the Performance (up to 12 Mbps downloads with PowerBoost) pachakge. Correct me if I am wrong on that one.. And if someone uses this can you tell me how much speed you are getting? And is it reliable service? Also I just want internet from them not cable or phone.


So what other packages I can get in my area for under 45 bucks?
I love to play online games, I love to upload stuff too, these days there are more megs and gigs to download and upload, so I need something good that will set me for few years.
 
There's probably not much else in your area. What plan are you on? That price seems weird since they are offering 3008/768 on their site with a 2 year contract and home phone service for the life of the plan.

It was the normal plan back a couple of years ago yeah it suppose to be like 1.5 to 3 megs, but its down to 1.5. Now I got a call from Verizon that they will lower my price if I sing in a year contact, but I don't want slow connection for another year, So i said NO and I am looking for faster speeds around same current price. They say FIOS would be good for me for same price, but they don't know when it will be available for my area! So for sure if they had plans for my area, it would take a month or two ,but they don't know, it can take a year.. oh..

10 dollars more for new customer? that means I do not need Phone or TV service by them to just have Internet right? I wanna know this before I call them, so they wont rip me off or anything by twisting things up.
 
Oops, missed the cost of that Verizon plan. It was $27.99/month for new customers. So $45 seems a bit steep for what you are getting. You could probably talk them down to a lower price. Did you try to find out why your speeds are low or is it just because of the distance to the CO/hub?

I'm not sure about what that $10 for new customers means, but I remember that in the past it was generally $10 more if you did not have their cable TV service. $53/month sounds right but I don't know about any of the taxes involved. I'm not sure if they do this anymore, but in the past Comcast had about a 300GB limit per month.

At the cost you're paying, you should have twice the performance. I remember I originally had 1.5mb/s but I asked for it to be increased at no additional cost. As it turns out, they upped the speeds for the package I was paying for, but they don't switch you over unless you request it. Nice, huh?

Try giving a call to customer service and ask for your higher speeds. If you don't have it available to you, ask why. Several times they said to me, "You live too far away from our offices... blah, blah, blah." One day, I asked and I got the increase. The point is, keep calling to ask for higher speeds.

I'm still waiting for Verizon FIOS service to reach my area. Still hasn't despite getting two notices it was available to me. I don't know; it's hard to figure this company out. Your guess is as good as mine. So, don't be shocked if you get nowhere, but keep trying.

That's what I get with comcast. It's around 45$ month. But I'm in texas, price and speed may vary.

See I need something like this. 43 here a month they say, but for people that already have phone or TV with them, I would have to pay 53 since i have no plans with them.., unless I call them and they give me a good deal.

Well I won't call them untill 3 weeks from now once I get back from Mexico.

PS WOW is not here.

Judging from the link that ROAD DOG gave me, my area pretty much has Verizon and Comcast. I don't want to wait another year for FIOS, and Comcast is damn quick, besides COMCAST TOWER is here in Philadelphia, I bet they could give me a great LOCAL deal ;)

I'm using DSLExtreme in LA.

The plan I'm paying for is about $25/month. I get 2.5 down and about 0.4 up.
 
So finally me and my brother decided to call in Comcast. So far so good, We will get the Performance package for $59 something a month (We pay extra because we do not have anything from Comcast, BUT,they will give us first 6 months will only cost $20 dollars. Also installation about $50. So Overall prices are not bad.
The guy that will install it will come in Wednesday, thats 2 days from the call, impressive (compared to damn 2 week wait we had for Verizon.

So so far so good, I'll be back here on Wednesday night if everything went as planned. And to post my speeds here.
It suppose to be 12 Download and 2 upload... but lets see how the stats stuck up once i have it ; )

You gotta be happy with that, my parents pay 59 or 69 dollars a month for some internet which is 1.3mb down and .20mb up. Its hopeless. Mind you we do get 80gb of download.

I noticed I shouldn't have been paying $33.99, so I complained. They didn't care. So, a couple days later, I called to cancel. I was going to switch to a different company.

As usual, they switch you over to retention and try to keep you. I told them there's no way they could keep me. The other plan was too good to pass up. I was at 3Mb/s down and .75Mb/s up, as the results show above for that $33.99 price. Now, I'm at 7Mb/s down and .75Mb/s up for $29.99 a month and they're not charging me tax, like they did before.


However, I'm not get my full 7Mb/s as it appears. They probably only switched me to 5Mb/s. I'd complain again, but I don't want to push my luck, but I'll give it a try in a few days and see how far I can get.



I noticed my png time improved a lot. How does that relate to my performance?
 
Your ping is how long it takes to send the information to/from a server. So with your ping, it takes 26 milliseconds to actually start loading a page/download/whatever.
 
Ah, ok. Thanks for the info.

I tried to post my PS3 results, but for some reason I couldn't post my stored results. I don't know why. I've done it before. But, the results were the same but with a png time that was twice as large.

However, one time I had a result that was over 10Mb/s which was odd.

Isn't cable the internet services that has speeds that fluctuate? That could be it.

I just called Verizon and complained about my download speed (it's 4.6 and should be 7.1). They gave me a bunch of stupid reasons why they didn't give me the deal they had offered. So, again I told them to cancel my service. I was then offered and promised the full 7.1 package which they told me I was qualified to receive.

They tried to talk me out of it with their, "Uh, for some reason, we can't offer you the full speed due to your location from our main office." Yeah, right. They tried that crap with me before.

So, they'll give me my increase in the next few days. Fingers crossed.

Nope, I didn't get my increase. I called tech support and they claimed I should have my full 7.1 speeds. BTW, since yesterday, my speed has dropped to 4.20 and PNG of nearly double as before.

They're sending out a tech to my house to figure out what the problem can be.
